I think we'll need a striker, but I can't see us complimenting Agbonlahor, Bent & Delfouneso with a £15million signing.
Maybe a cheaper signing, yes.

Aston Villa are ready to join the chase for Wigan’s £15million-rated striker Hugo Rodallega, 25.

Manager Alex McLeish has drawn up a list of targets with Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given his priority while Rodallega’s team-mate Charles N’Zogbia, West Ham midfielder Scott Parker and Tottenham right back Alan Hutton also figure

McLeish is awaiting a renewed offer from Liverpool for winger Stewart Downing, 26, with Villa maintaining their stance that unless their £20m valuation is met he will not be sold. Arsenal are also interested in the England man.

Rodallega, who is playing for Colombia in the Copa America, revealed at the weekend that Arsenal had also asked about him, while Everton maintain an interest.

He said: ‘There are many teams interested, it’s true. Villarreal, Sevilla, Arsenal also have some interest, and Everton. There is a lot of speculation but my future at this moment is at Wigan.’

Meanwhile, newly promoted Real Betis are closing in on a £260,000 deal for Wigan defender Antonio Amaya. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with former club Rayo Vallecano.

Always rated Rodallega. Would be happy with all of those signings

This just looks like lazy journalism, I really like Rodallega scored a great goal against us the season before but i doubt very much that we will be signing him and Nzogbia would love it all to be true but in reality i dont think so.

Agree

We have been talking about Nzogbia for about 2 months and has any approach been made?

Parker will stop in London and I couldn't see Randy spending millions on an aging player who will yet again have no resale value.

Fuck me we've been fannying about with Given for 2 weeks

Lerner won't commit the funds - he's cutting the squad and down sizing. As you say after weeks/ months of speculation....nothing. I can't see any signings in this window - just like last summer and look what happened to the manager.

Jesus mate, whenever I read one of your posts i feel like opening my veins in a warm bath

I wonder if what we're seeing is a manager with a set budget waiting to see if that is bulked up by Downing leaving?  Let's say he has a £20m kitty, but if Downing goes for the suggested £20m and we replace him with N'Zogbia for £9m, then that kitty shoots up to £31m.  And that could be the difference between Given or Foster.  Maybe he badly wants Scott Dann, but can't afford him unless the extra cash comes in for Downing?

As with a lot of transfer windows, I think there will be a domino effect and one deal sets off numerous others.  For the market as a whole I think that could be Modric, but for us I'm increasinly thinking it's Downing.

You might well be right.  Maybe we are waiting to flog Downing before we buy Nzogbia just in case Liverpool then decide to come in lower than our valuation knowing we'll have to sell to balance the books.  It's all guess work though isn't it!

If we're really waiting for the Downing money before AM can make any substantial moves in the transfer market then we're up shit creek basically. Keeper, centre half, left-back, right back ,young replacement, Downing replacement, centre midfielder all from the Downing money??

There's two thing that the Board could've done this summer: Appoint a Manager that the majority of fans agree with and sign some quality players. What have they done?... The exact opposite. If Downing goes we might as well pack up. I just don't like the way the board are supposedly moving us forward. If you don't invest season by season there's only one direction the club will go. Selling the best players and cutting costs is not the way forward. It would help if the club had some proper PR and told us the club's intentions for once.

In a word, no.

I'm suggesting that the Downing money would have an impact of who we could go after, not that it was totally reliant on it.  For instance, lets say we're after a CB (not convinced we are, personally) and McLeish has earmarked £6m of his kitty for that.  Sell Downing for £20m and that portion could rise to £10m and mean we get a better CB.

What obligation does the board have to appoint a manager that the majority of fans agree with?? It's RL's money therefore he has the right to appoint whoever he likes, what next do we demand a say in team selection? I accept that you're entitled to your opinion but why cant you wait and see what happens in the rest of the window rather than constantly trotting out the same gloomy negativity?

Villafirst I agree

I have a really bad feeling about this summer

AM saying he may not get all the AY money
Saying youth will be given a chance
All players have a clean slate

To me that says we are going to do sod all in the transfer window but unless you say we are going to sign Nzogbia, Foster, Dann, parker et al then you're a killjoy

Every summer window since Randy has been here we've spent heavily, with the exception of the last one, which he more than made up for in the following January.  Yes, there may have been a change in approach behind the scenes following the game-changing Man City takeover and the altered larger financial climate, but if nothing else this board have earned the benefit of the doubt when it comes to back their manager in the transfer market.

I think people are still hung up on the appointment of Mcleish to the point where everything the board now do, or do not do, is recieved with negative spin.  Get over it.  You don't like the manager, but just because they've made an unpopular decision does not mean they've become the source all evil!

You're making assumptions that people are receiving news in a certain way just because they don't like the manager. That isn't correct.

You admit there may have been a change in approach by the board. Can you accept that people agree with that and logically take their views to a more pessimistic conclusion than your own?
