Oh joy. The idea of kamikaze diving into tackles in the centre of the pitch as opposed to the flanks. Cold sweats, must lie down!

Aston Villa are ready to join the chase for Wigan’s £15million-rated striker Hugo Rodallega, 25.

Manager Alex McLeish has drawn up a list of targets with Manchester City goalkeeper Shay Given his priority while Rodallega’s team-mate Charles N’Zogbia, West Ham midfielder Scott Parker and Tottenham right back Alan Hutton also figure

McLeish is awaiting a renewed offer from Liverpool for winger Stewart Downing, 26, with Villa maintaining their stance that unless their £20m valuation is met he will not be sold. Arsenal are also interested in the England man.

Rodallega, who is playing for Colombia in the Copa America, revealed at the weekend that Arsenal had also asked about him, while Everton maintain an interest.

He said: ‘There are many teams interested, it’s true. Villarreal, Sevilla, Arsenal also have some interest, and Everton. There is a lot of speculation but my future at this moment is at Wigan.’

Meanwhile, newly promoted Real Betis are closing in on a £260,000 deal for Wigan defender Antonio Amaya. The 28-year-old spent last season on loan with former club Rayo Vallecano.

I am not advocating the idea, I just have a feeling that is what might happen. If Downing isn't sold I am starting to think we are stuck with what we have plus a goalkeeper. That leaves us very weak in central midfield as there is only Petrov that can play DM, and he really can't handle more than two thirds of a game on last seasons evidence.

Can see the line up being something like:

..........................................Given / Guzan...............................

Cuellar / Lichaj..............Collins / Clarke............Dunne / nobody.............Young / Baker

Albrighton / Bannan.....Warnock / petrov......Delph / Makoun..........Downing / Ireland

....................Bent / Heskey......Gabby / Delfouneso......................

Again not my pick, just what I think 'Eck' might go with as he has said he will go with wingers (plural) and gabby up front (assuming with Bent). That or any other team permed from the current squad is pretty scary (never mind the second string), so lets hope we don't get many injuries.

What we have right now is mid table at best, and could be in real trouble with a few injuries.

I really hope that there is cash made available for a couple of decent players if we don't sell Downing. If it really is the case that Downing has to be sold to fund new signings, then we need to do so and find a couple of players that can tackle else that team will ship a lot of goals as the midfield is very timid.

This just looks like lazy journalism, I really like Rodallega scored a great goal against us the season before but i doubt very much that we will be signing him and Nzogbia would love it all to be true but in reality i dont think so.

Another pointless day on here I see. how hard is it to sign Citeh's reserve 'keeper? Or are we that short on dough that we're haggling on half a million?

15m for Rodallega? No chance. We have more urgent positions to be filled first.

Agree

We have been talking about Nzogbia for about 2 months and has any approach been made?

Parker will stop in London and I couldn't see Randy spending millions on an aging player who will yet again have no resale value.

Fuck me we've been fannying about with Given for 2 weeks

I think the Given delay is all about Man City dragging their heels and taking the piss again.
It's unfortunate that we have to deal with those horrible twats.

Lerner won't commit the funds - he's cutting the squad and down sizing. As you say after weeks/ months of speculation....nothing. I can't see any signings in this window - just like last summer and look what happened to the manager.
