Liverpool prepare new Downing bid

Liverpool are set to make an improved £18.5million bid for Stewart Downing.

The Reds are ready to return to Aston Villa with a fresh offer for the England winger after having a £15m bid rejected.

Villa are demanding at least £20m for Downing, who is keen to move to Anfield, and Liverpool hope their increased offer will be enough to clinch the deal.

Liverpool are anxious to move quickly to prevent Arsenal from hijacking their summer-long pursuit of Downing.

They are desperate to land the Villa star to improve their options out wide after missing out to Manchester United and Newcastle on Ashley Young and Sylvain Marveaux.

"We’re happy with the business we’ve done so far," said Reds manager Kenny Dalglish.

"Hopefully we will do some more business before the window closes, but I’m not going to give names because that’s disrespectful.

“We are looking to bring other players in and that could mean we expect some to leave.

“That’s football, but we have a while to go yet and we’ll see what we can do.”

For the same reason, I'm glad we never went for Mike Sheron from Man Citeh early 90's:

'Golden Brown texture like sun, lays me down with my Mike Sheron's...'

Bunch of arse.

With Chelsea already having Fernando Torres, Didier Drogba, Nicolas Anelka, Daniel Sturridge and Kalou on their books, space will have to made both in the dressing room and on the wage bill before anyone comes in. Nicolas Anelka is thought to be destined for pastures new but with Torres and Drogba guaranteed to be there next year with Sturridge also impressing the new man, rumours are that Kalou could the man to join the Frenchman through the exit door.

Such talk has piqued the interest of Aston Villa and Everton both of whom are keen to add some firepower to their respective squads. The Birmingham club have been shorn of the services of Ashley Young who defected to Manchester United earlier this summer and aree keen to replace him with another atttack-minded player. With just Darren Bent - and arguably Gabriel Agbonlahor - as genuine goal threats among their strikers, new boss Alex Mcleish would like to add the Ivorian to his ranks. While Kalou has often been the subject of derision from the Stamford Bridge stands, McLeish is aware of his potency in the opposition penalty area having reached double figures in the Premier League last campaign despite making just 15 starts.

Tofffes manager David Moyes is also fully briefed on Kalou's ability and, in addition, knows his strike force needs freshening up with the injury-prone Louis Saha now 32 years old. Jermaine Beckford has started to find his feet at Premier League level following last summer's switch from Leeds United but Moyes would like an established Premier League performer to line up alongside him.

However, he question remains whether cash-strapped Everton can find ther £10m needed to sign the 25-year-old - nevermind his wages - which leaves Aston Villa in the box seat with the cash from the Young sale currently burning a hole in their pocket.

Personally I think Everton could do a lot worse than Adebayor or someone similar on loan. Solid defence, good balance in midfield. It's just up top that lets them down.

If they did nothing else but ship out a few fringe players to pay a big chunk of his wages, they'd be in pretty decent shape this season.

Actually Adebayor would be pretty useful to us. Fuck Everton.

Kalou would be a brilliant signing if we want to play 433.

Dunno Maz.

£18+ million on Bent means it's him + whoever.  Both are more suited to playing up top on their own, and £80K + a week on wages for a loan player not guaranteed to start would be folly.

Once we get some of the more obvious squad deficiencies sorted though, I do think we should be looking  a young up and coming target man. Either from here or abroad. I liked the look of Van Wolfswinkel at Utrecht, 6ft + and a Dutch international from a young age. But he's gone to Sporting Lisbon for a ridiculously low fee.

There are bargains out there to be had, which hopefully this Montgomery fella will unearth.

Kalou would be ok in a 433 I reckon. Better than Bendtner anyway.

hard to know how gabby will fit in, he had a great year 2 season back - 16 goals and led the line really well, carling cup final etc but I dont think bent and himself will work in a 442 and cant see him being any use in a 433. Hard to say this but its probably worth considering offers for him.

Pretty frustrating at the moment, Given & Nzogbia deals still not done, we seem stony broke and have just paid how many million for a manager than brought down our biggest rivals twice in 3 years. Doesnt seem to be any takers for Heskey, Beye and Petrov either. Presume Warnock and Ireland are to be given another chance.

If I were you, I'd go for somebody equally adept at playing wide or providing quality cover for Bent if he gets injured/needs a rest.

Somebody like Vucinic maybe although he's possibly out of reach.

I think if Vucinic left Roma he'd be looking at a top CL club.  Kalou though would be fantastic buisness if it were possible, although I certainly have my doubts.

I hadn't even considered Kalou, but thinking on it I would say he'd be an excellent addition to the team, especially if we play 4-3-3. Up front or on the wing, he can score goals.

Of course, I'd be reciting Jabberwocky more than is usual.....

I've always considered Kalou to be a clown. Why can't we just get Sturridge!

I think gabby is a pretty ideal replacement for Bent in the event of injury/tiredness etc. Also, I think he has played enough games as a winger to be handy as one of the outside of a three. Personally I think he's still got a big part to play and seems to be of the right character to play any role for the team.
