clowns?  Nice.  Seemed to do ok for three of the last four seasons.  And last years Disaster shows how far we have come.  Disasterous seasons for me usually involve staying up on goal difference

Every transfer window at around this time the first signs of panic set in. People who have been main lining Sky Sports News and taking notice of the type of newpaper that hacks dead children's phones get more and more excited at the opportunity to demonstrte just how angry they are that on 11th July we haven't signed any players as they're just waiting for the chance to say how crap anyone we sign is.

To be honest the NOTW hacking story unfolding over the last week has been way more interesting than football has for a long time.

It can only be a matter of time before eastie catches on and starts keeping us abreast of it all.

The point being mr smith that it is nice to get new players settled early and have a pre season at the club rather than arrive at the last minute and be thrown straight in- nobody is saying how shit anyone is , we are just waiting and hoping for some action to give things a boost .

It is far easier to do this when the management team has had the back end of the previous season to identify potential targets.

yeh agree Chris. The manager met most of his new players for the very first time on Friday. It would be unrealistic for him to have a really good impression of them so soon. I think AM has an idea of the players he'd like to bring in and the fact that Ash needs to be replaced. But I'm sure he wants to see what the likes of Warnock, Dunne, Ireland etc all have before he goes and spends club money and essentially writes those players off.

If Downing does go then it will trigger some action. If he is allowed to leave it will happen quite quickly or not at all because the club won't want be fucked around. The goalkeeper will be sorted this week, but I don't expect a lot more very soon aside maybe the Parker issued being resolved because West Ham might force someones hand.

I you look at how each summer window unfolds, then the majority of the deals only get done once everyone is back for pre-season.  The earlier ones have usually been set up for a while and only waiting for the window to officially open to get completed.  Ash to Man Utd being a prime example.

Like it or not, we've got a new manager in and that means we're going to be one of the later entrants into the market.  I'll start worrying in the realistic players we could/should be after start moving elsewhere, such as N'Zogbia or Parker.

If Wheelan is looking for around £20 million for N'Zogbia then I can't see him arriving at B6 until the final week of the window when the price should have dropped to a more realistic level.

it's really depressing seeing Sunderland bring in nine

If I were a Sun'land supporter i'd be very depressed looking at the 9 players they've signed. Bruce will be sacked by xmas.

Oh I dont know. I reckon Bruce has bought solid if uninspiring signings that will keep them more or less around 10th-13th. I'm not envious of one purchase they've made though and it's mostly a waste of the massive fees they've had for Bent and Henderson. They could be getting some exciting players in but they're not. Just attritional solid players. I doubt he'll be sacked.

I'd have liked to see Roger Johnson here , a solid defender and good value at that price - flog dune to wolves and get Roger .

Harris making noises about how he likes parker so I reckon we have no chance now- should have got him earlier before this modric dust up.

Wigan were the ones saying £9m for nzogbia so I imagine he must have that clause, why is given taking so long?

The way it's going someone will step in and snap him up before us, it's really depressing seeing Sunderland bring in nine and other clubs doing their deals while we seem to be standing still.

Did you miss a bit there eastie? I think you meant 'it's really depressing for their fans seeing Sunderland bring in nine such average players who no one else in their right mind would have wanted and who redefine the word 'average'.....'

Agree, Sunderland have bought a bigger squad, not necessarily a better one.  It will keep them mid-table which is probably what they are aiming for.  Bruce is a half decent, if extraordinarily ugly manager.
