Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish wants to tie up a deal for Wigan's Charles N'Zogbia this weekend.

McLeish is resigned to losing England winger Stewart Downing, despite rejecting Liverpool's initial £15m offer.

Downing will tell his new manager he wants to quit Villa Park ahead of an improved Liverpool offer and McLeish wants owner Randy Lerner and his chief executive Paul Faulkner to snap up £10m-rated N'Zogbia quickly.

Sunderland and Newcastle have both enquired about the midfielder but the fee and his £60,000-a-week wage demands have put them off.

McLeish hopes money from the Downing sale, and Ashley Young's departure to Manchester United, will be released to fund moves for N'Zogbia, West Ham's Scott Parker and Manchester City's wantaway keeper Shay Given.

Youngs money has covered the bent deal. If the Downing money covers the Given,Parker,Nzogbia deals I believe will be moving forward again.
I don't get were the perception that we sold Young to cover the Bent fee has come from, surely it was the Milner fee that covered the Bent fee.

You may be right but Young was always going to Manu which meant the Bent fee was covered

It's something Matt Kendrick 'tweeted' a while back and Eastie brings it up every so often for some reason. I think it's bollocks.

Sunday sun is a Geordie paper and as I'm aware this is a transfer rumours thread , not a transfers confirmed thread?

People often post links to press rumours to be discussed on here- some happen and some are bullshit but please don't blame the messengers.

Erm, you're the one calling them bullshit rumours.

Yes it would but i'm surprised Parker has'nt signed for Spurs by now. I still think that's where he'll end up, but i do like the idea of him alongside Makoun.

Quite....

http://www.metro.co.uk/sport/football/868577-alan-hutton-set-for-alex-mcleish-reunion-with-aston-villa-transfer

Given, Hutton, Parker, N'Zogbia replacing;
Freidel, Walker, NRC, Young

Would be OK in my book.

Replace Collins with someone like Dann and Downing if he wants out with someone like Jarvis and we'd be all set.

N'Zogbia, Given and Hutton would do me fine.

Wage bill should have been cut massively, we will finish in the top half and then we can build to realistically challenge when Clark, Albrighton, Bannan, Delph, Delfouneso, Gardner and maybe a couple others come of age.

Mills going to Leicester for 4.5 million is an interesting deal. I though Eck might take a look at him and off load Dunne.

Hutton for 3 million, Parker for 7, NZogbia for 10, Given for 4 and Hitz on a free would be a good start. Get in that Dutch lad too out wide if Downing goes and we may even come out in profit while not being miles weaker.

I think the kind of deal you'd need to offer Parker would be the polar opposite of where we are wanting to go.

West Ham won't sell under 7 I would think. But if you rationalise the money and the ability of the player, in comparison to say a Sidwell or a Beye, the value element might be decent. I think McLeish will get one signing that stretched the philosophy of cheap if old and sell on value needed if pricey. I am a bit surprised we are not being linked with 2-3 young championship players though as squad players.

Pity because he'd be a great signing for us.  I'm hoping the board are still willing to pay top money to top players; perhaps it's just the top money to shit players that they want to cut out.
