The best we can hope for is a top half finish and good runs in the cups and hopefully winning one.I think Eck is capable of doing that for us

If and I say if it is true that the young money was spent in advance on bent and that we have only the cash left for a keeper as kendrick says , then the sell to buy and playing youth policy we will be looking at will see other teams go past us like Sunderland and Newcastle.

Without decent investmest in this league you will struggle and maybe randy gave it his best shot and it failed , if he no longer can put the money in needed to compete then what will he do-stay and be happy to survive or sell up to a rich investor who can pump in cash to take us forward?

Hang on, the Young money was spent on Bent? So who was the Milner money spent on?
Milner minus the12 million we spent on him originally= Makoun

randys divorce or balancing the books? i dare say randy hasnt a bottomless pit of money and the financial crisis has hit hard over the last 2 years .
paying off mon , ged and gary mac plus bringing in eck?

Buying Bent in January was entirely in keeping with a sell-to-buy strategy, the money was raised through the sale of Milner.

Unless the board make a serious investment in the squad this summer, then it is time to accept that their investment strategy is Ellisian at best.

We can't know that - as in know what we would have done had Milner not gone.  When you factor in that we had also changed manager to someone the board had more faith in, then that could also be the reason we spent in Jan and not the summer.

I do agree with your 2nd paragraph though - we've got a new manager, who is their choice, and prety much the whole summer to target and negotiate with players, so no more excuses - come 1st September we'll know where we stand.

Money is everything you can run a club to perfection but if you don't have enough to splash around you are destined for mid table at best. The premiership is going the way of Scotland where only two clubs have a realistic chance of winning. I think we have possibly three but maybe only two both in Manchester. Chelsea would have been in it but somehow i don't think it will happen for them. What a sorry position football is in nowdays.

i think most of us already know where we stand with the approaches for Martinez and AM.  Average managers used to surviving (or not) on a limited budget. You don't go and buy a Vauxhall vectra if you're planning to enter formula 1.

For fucks sake, give the guy a chance. Signing Darren Bent wasn't a Vauxhall move from the board.

I'm guessing the new '(2)5 year plan' is to follow Everton's route - lower wages, a more balanced budget sheet in regards to transfers, with a much bigger reliance on our youth set-up. Getting the big earners like Downing off the wage bill would fit into that sort of scenario

Perhaps then we, too, could have a site like this:

No. It was more of a part exchange as Bent was bought with the Milner money.

Unless things change in a radical way, we'll have to assume that Mr Lerner Sir is a remixed Doug Ellis.

If so, that's a real shame after the big strides we made in the first 3 years.

Is that such a bad thing?

If you look at the spending power Randy has brought to bear since he took over it's not inconsiderable, yet it isn't enough to buy our way into the top 4.  Even if it was before the whole Man City thing has put paid to that.  So we look to the youth set up, which is a strength of ours anyway, and this allows us to re-focus the money we do have.

I still want to see deals like Milner/Ash/Downing coming it, but no more of the Sidwell/Beye/Harewood.  The kids taking the place of the latter so we can get a few more of the former.

It's no great stretch to say 'we'll be signing new players'
The question is what sort of quality will they be?
