Eastie , 6th to 8th is the upper limit of our aspirations I suspect. I'd snap your hands off for that next season at this point in time

They've been softening us up for Downing going ever since they let it be known McLeish would not be getting all of the Young money.

Wouldn't be surprised if Downing now hands in a transfer request, spouting all the usual bollocks. We reluctantly accept it, spouting all the usual bollocks. It will mean we can accept a slightly lower offer as we won't have his contract to pay up.

We then buy inferior players while some on here tell us we've got the best of the deal, a la Milner.

Ian Taylor just been on sky saying we need to agree a fee and move on as an unhappy player is not someone you want in the club- I expect maybe £18m will tie it up- downing is nowhere near as big a loss as Barry, Milner or young were and I'd hope we now move fast on nzogbia.

As long as Villa isn't successful, the best way to attract promising players is to be a selling club. Otherwise you probably end up with sorry retainers like myself, and that's not ambitious.

Bid 10 M for Hutton / Kranjcar?  Decent players that. And Kranjcar could add something in our midfield along Delph, Makoun & Bannan.

Get Nzogbia & Give or another GK and a young left back ( some names are mentioned already).

And sell downing for about 20 ish, if he wants to go.

Leaves us with a squad:

Given
Hutton, Dunne, Collins, Luke
Albrighton, makoun, kranjcar, petrov, delph, nzogbia
                        bent

And still got Ireland & gabby.
Maybe with the Downing get Milner back for 18? If he wants too and make him the star player of the squad in the middle.

After these latest developments, all I can say is that Downing is a fucking scumbag.
We know players have no loyalty at all, but his actions in engineering this move are taking the piss.

We signed him injured, when he finally played that season he was sub standard.
He then plays well for a full season and then wants out.

I wish him nothing but the worst in his career. Fucking little weasel.

Totally different to I how feel about Ashley who always gave his all for the cause and understandably left to join the 2nd biggest club in the world.

I'm also willing to bet that our club, which is rapidly turning into a fucking feeder club, will not spend the full proceeds from Ashley and Downing, when in actual fact they should be investing £10m + on top of that amount.

The new boss, same as the old boss.

Spurs seem to be making a good fist of hanging onto modric . . . Helped no doubt by retaining a strong ambition and a six year contract. Why we don't offer more than 4 year deals I don't know. We'd at least get more money if we sell.

He's been on holiday, back today to tell them he wants to go to Chelsea. Lets see how well they do then.

Given, Hutton, Kranjcar & Nzogba would be a very good transfer window. That would only cost £25m roughly?

Maybe we'll make another 'big' signing if Downing goes. Charlie Adam? Milner back? (doubt that)

I can't see Ireland getting much of a look in if Kranjcar comes.

Hard to argue with that fletch, downing is a greedy ungrateful character on a par with hodge and I hope he gets to lose his England place and sees his career go downhill on merseyside.

Who both seem to be carrying the cross for the mistakes of the boss before.

This is all rather depressing.

Hutton would be a good signing at 3 million though. Get NZogbia too and that is 2 positions replaced. Given is 3. Then we would be about through the Downing money. Leaving 10 million or so on a midfield creator and a second wide man? Plus a striker if Heskey goes.

Do well and richer clubs come in and poach your best players, don't do well and richer clubs come in and poach your players. Modern football is rubbish.

Downing is under contract and worth twice what we paid for him in today's crazy market.

I have a really bad feeling about the amount of money we are going to spend.

AM has been quoted as saying he may not have all the money. I don't read this as mind games so other clubs think we have no money I read it as we aren't going to spend.

The reliance on youth supports this, I think we will buy a GK and then there will be a couple of free transfers/cheap buys. Lets be honest what is the draw for Nzogbia to come to us???
