Does that count for o neill at Celtic as well fletch?

They had comparable records but mcleish did at on a much lower budget at a time when rangers finances were limited and Celtic were spending big.

Eck won more than mon, got rangers into the knockout stages for the 1st time in their history and did it as you say on a shoestring budget. If this man has money we will be dangerous...
Celtic and Rangers both operate on shoestring budgets, it's not like McLeish was doing anything radical.

Your only focus is to be better than ONE other team.

How do you 'spin' two relegations?

Well I for one was delighted with both.

As for Jerome, all strikers need confidence but he appears to have never had any. I'm struggling to think of a worse striker last season, he's at best a Championship player, nothing more.

It would be pretty damn hard for any Manager not to win trophies in the 2 horse race they Call Scottish football.
Strachan won trophies up there. Two notable exceptions are Tony Mowbray and John Barnes.

If David O'Leary got a job at Celtic or Rangers, he'd win trophies.
Billy McNeil won trohies there and how fondly do we remember him?

It really is meaningless.

I think the only thing you can really take from winning trophies in Scotland is it demonstrates an ability to work at a club where expecations are really high. To deal with that level of intense scrutiny where failure is not an option. So on that level he'll be prepared for the pressure at VP, we just have to hope that the parts of him that helped win a trophy down the road transfer with him and the relegation bit stays behind.

Can i moan about the people moaning about the other people who are moaning that we might be signing some players, who might be not very good.
This isn't good enough, we need something proper to moan about, c'mon Alex sign someone so we can have a proper moan.

Your need to have something to moan about. Might turn to crying if he signs Jerome .......

The Jerome rumour is probably a load of bollocks, but there is one player I could see him getting from there, Keith Fahey who is possibly one of the worst players to grace the Premiership.

Blues mates told me when McLeish was there that he was a favourite of his and always talked him up saying what a great attitude he had and how versatile he was.

He was chronic in many games and nobody could understand why he never substituted him.

Sigh... Cameron Jerome. All very predictable - we were bound to get linked with him sooner or later. So far we've been linked to Jerome, Foster, Johnson, Larsson, Dann: all Blues players under McLeish. Plus N'Zogbia, formerly a target for McLeish at Blues. Oh, and Given.

There'll be more to come. What a long, long, summer it feels already.

To be fair, this rumour has surfaced from Scotland.  Not one english paper (to my knowledge) has reported it so lets hope the Jerome rumour is just utter bollocks!

this rumour bollocks is a piece of piss when you think about it. Throw out any name on any old website, and give it marginal credibility if the player has ever played for the incumbent manager. Get someone to post said rumour on an internet message board and let it grow legs and arms to the point that some are beside themselves in disgust or delight.

When you think about it, the amount of players that we've been "close" to signing or "Sky Sports or TalkSport understands...." is phenominal as a percentage of what actually ever actually comes off or was even ever close to being the truth.

which proves my point. That article is a summary who they think are coming and going and doesn't take into account the fact that AM wants to talk to all of these players. Further more recent acrticles have suggested Ireland might want to stay and is keen to talk to AM. They could write this article tomorrow and add Warnock and it wouldn't be any more accurate.

This is a league where the likes of Samaras and Kenny Miller (who are both shit) can score for fun.

It really is meaningless.
[/quote]

Mate you really should do a wee bit of research before going into a rant like that
Samaras couldn't score in a brothel ffs 3 Goals for a number 9 in one of the big Two in Scotland is no record to be proud of.

As for McLeish having a poor record
He brought Hibs up at 1st attempt
Finished 2nd and 3rd with Motherwell in SCottish Premier that is not a bad feat by anyone standards
came into a Rangers team riddled with debt ended O'Neills dominance winning 5 out of 6 trophies available to him in his first 18 month in charge and qualified through Champions League Group stages.
brought a Poor Birmingham team back up won a trophy with them,

as much as I like Villa and enjoy watching them win some people need to take a long hard look at things the pressures on an Old Firm manager are immense you have to win EVERY game other wise you are in midst of a crisis sure SPL is a poor league but finishing second in Glasgow is worse feeling ever.

McLeish will do well for Villa given support and time but without that Villa will be starting from scratch again with someone else next season

This reported bid of £16m for dann and jerome from stoke  was actually revealed to be bollocks as Stoke confirmed they made a combined bid of £12m - the press love to stir things up and have little real idea as to who our targets will be .

As for criticising the poor level of Scottish football- it speaks volumes for mcleish that he could get such an average team so far in Europe does it not?
