Times are saying the Given deal is imminent.
Man City looking for £6m, but fee likely to be £4m.

Rip Van, can you post the article on here as I'm a tight-wad and don't have Times Subscription?

Neither do I, I only buy the paper, Luddite that I am.

But it says

'Aston Villa moved closer to a deal to sign Shay Given from Man City last night. City hoped to recover the £6m they paid Newcastle for the Ireland goalkeeper, but are expected to accept £4m.'

'Roberto Mancini will allow him to leave as there is time to find a replacement.'

Express also reporting much the same on Given this morning.

If we can get Given & N'Zogbia in and then McLeish take a couple of weeks to have a look at the squad in training I'd say that would be a reasonable starting point.

The sticking point with Given is whether he's willing to change his name to Brad or not.

I'm not Given's biggest fan and would have some reservations, but I'd welcome him aboard. He and Dunne will have a partnership so it makes some sense. You'd imagine he knows Ciaran too.

N'Zogbia for £9m would be absolutely fantastic. That's Summer 2013's high-profile departure sorted already.

Yep agree with this N'Zogbia on his day is the sort of player i would pay to watch a bit of excitement something different, i dont want to sound sour but Ash did become predictable and while i thought he was a good player he was a bit overated

Got a nasty feeling N'Zogbia is going to end up at Newcastle, which will be a massive blow as he does look like he could do what Young has for us, with maybe a bit more flair than the Ash of the last 18 months, who had become more efficient but IMO less exciting to watch.

Given if fit and able is a good keeper, and ensures essentially 3 seasons of a top keeper. The young Swiss lad has time to come through then, and isn't he meant to be very capable?

I would love one of the mooted loans of Canales and Diego to come off, that would be great behind Bent, with Albrighton and N'Zogbia wide. Ah dreams eh.

Hitz and Reo Coker on frees I would sign up to be fair. Hitz has a great left foot and Spam improved when he and Parker were together in the centre of the park.

Petrov is not getting younger, Bradley has gone, Pires has gone. Delph, Petrov, Bannan, Makoun.... could do with a couple more in there, and Hitz has a goal threat.

Aston Villa moved closer to a deal to sign Shay Given from Manchester City last night. City hoped to recover the £6 million that they paid Newcastle United for the Ireland goalkeeper but are expected to accept closer to £4 million.

Villa allowed Brad Friedel, their former No 1, to leave on a free transfer to Tottenham Hotspur and have had doubts about Brad Guzan. Given, 35, made only four appearances last season after he lost his place to Joe Hart, the England goalkeeper.

Roberto Mancini will allow him to leave because there is time to find a replacement, unlike a year ago, when the Ireland goalkeeper complained that the manager had vetoed a move late in the transfer window.

Yes, that was what i was thinking, replace the 2 that have already gone and give him a few weeks to have a look. We might only really need 1 or 2 more in if he can get most on board.

Still think midfield is a bit light weight. I know Barton is a twat but he would put some steel around Makoun, Downing/Nzogbia, Bannana, Delph. Diego would really make the juices flow ..........
