Did West Ham really do something mental like sign Ba for £7 mill and agree to a free transfer if they went down?

I though he was on loan.

Ba-king mad? Demba joins relegation strugglers West Ham until 2014

West Ham have signed Hoffenheim striker Demba Ba on a three-year-and-a-half deal.

The Senegal international had signed for the Hammers on loan earlier in the week but the deal has now been made a permanent one.

Ba becomes the club's third signing in the January transfer window following midfielder Gary O'Neil's arrival from Middlesbrough and Wayne Bridge's loan switch from Manchester City.

Can't believe that Friedel is signing for Spurs (apparently). Must look good as a highlights goalie. And he'll be on a nice 50k a week until he's 42...fair play I suppose.
Van Der Saar has retired younger having retained far more of his goalkeeping faculties than Brad.

And has more medals.

Brad thought he will able to earn his spurs at er...Spurs.

If Mark Hughes joins Aston Villa as manager then he will definitely keep Warnock. Dunne will stay as well.
He will make a move for Samba. Ireland will stay. Shay Given might end up joining as goalkeeper.

                                         Given
L.Young                  Samba        Dunne                                Warnock

                  Ireland   Makoun(New DM)  Delph

Albrighton                                                                        Downing

                                      Bent

Sale of Ashley Young should finance a new defensive midfielder and winger (N'Zogbia??). I think Lichaj/Clark/Baker will give enough cover for full back positions.

Subs. Gabby, Petrov, Collins, Cuellar, Clark, Lichaj, Guzan

OUT: Heskey, Beye,

Stuart James in the guardian predicting a £25m pls splurge, but with practically every area of the squad needing strenghthening, assuming AY gies. Sounds about right to me.

Doesn't sound enough to me.
We'll be recouping most of that in sales as well.

Yeah, we'd need to spend what comes in via transfers and then some to even stand still in the premier league.

I'm presuming that would be net spend, which would be about right.

Net spend, yes that would be right.
The article makes it look like £25m regardless of sales though.

Lets see:-
Might be in the minority here, but I expect Downing to ultimatrely stay and what we get for Young should be enough to replace him.  So that leaves £25m for a keeper, two fullbacks, a centre back and two midfielders.  If you say another couple leave and generate some cash, then it's might be more like £30m.  I expect one of those midfielders, the more attacking of the two, not to be a signing but instead use a combination of Delph, Bannan and the 4-2-3-1 with all three of Downing, Albrighton and Ash's replacement playing.  I'd also expect that one of the players expected to leave is re-invigorated by the new manager, probably Dunne or Warnock, meaning one less signing needed.  So £30m for four players - a DCM, a right back, a CB or LB and a keeper.  I think that's do-able.
