Milner would be expensive and plays in a position where we are pretty strong so to sign him rather than defenders or a holding player would be a bit silly.

I was a HUGE fan of Jimmy and would dearly love him back, but it's hard to argue with that.  Maybe we could consider him a replacement for Ash and play a holding midfielder with Milner and Delph either side and Downing and Albrighton wide?

What’s that wingers name that played for Blackpool, speedy kid that I think they got from the lower divisions, mostly came on as a sub? He would be fairly cheap and would offer an option on the wing instead of Albrighton.

Matt Phillips. Looked a real good prospect early in the season, but his opportunities were limited when the going got tough for them. Seemed a powerful lad too, had a really good game at our place last season, he's a bit different to our other wingers. Wouldn't say no to seeing him at VP.

Thats the one, he looked decent whenever I watched Blackpool, very direct and put over some useful crosses.

With regards to the left back and defensive midfield positions, If Houllier is still in charge I can see us going for Cissokho (Lyon) and Diarra (Monaco, who have been relegated).

Cissokho would be awesome, but very expensive! He didn't play under Houllier either so not sure there is that kind of connection. Diarra was only on loan at Monaco, not sure when his contract is up at Madrid, I imagine he'd be available for next to nothing though.

Stanley Matthews?

Decent shout, but I reckon he's lost a yard of pace since he died.

Him and Pires in the same dressing room. That's Derek Acora territory

But he would be okay on a pay as you play contract

I'd like Seamus Colmean from Everton. He's out of contract i think and although i can imagine he'll re-sign for them, i'd definatley make an enquiry for him. He looked good last season.

That scroat cost me a top four finish in our Telegraph fantasy football league, good player though.

Re. the goalkeeper situation. Surely there are better (and probably cheaper) keepers out there than Robinson or Foster (on the continent that is)?

I don't know if he's been mentioned in here yet but what would opinion be regarding a possible move for Sebastien Bassong? I know a few Spurs fans who really like him. It appears Redknapp fell out with him, hence the lack of game-time. Rumoured to be available for less than 8M.

And while I'm talking about Spurs (this one may be a lot less popular as I'm the only non-Spuds fan that likes the bloke but...) What about Kranjcar? Creative and probably not expensive.

I like Bassong. Very pacey, something we lack at the back, and he can play.

Saw Westwood play for Republic of Ireland v Algeria in Dublin last may....pre world cup friendly for Algeria...not afraid to come and collect crosses against big centre forwards...commands his area....could be a good buy with a decent pair of centre backs.

just read on BBC website Joey Barton not wanting to stay on the toon. I would not mind him in our midfield. We either love him or hate him but he could do a job for us. We need to keep Reo Coker because of what he offers us. While he is not a box to box player he has put in some crucial tackles and has lifted a trophy the Peace Cup.
