I think Bridge improved after that 'mare he had on his West Ham debut but there's no hiding the fact he's not the player he was, not be any stretch.

When Benitez was lnked with being a potential new manager a week or so ago, I got to thinking about the old Valencia team, and remembered a player who I thought had fallen off the face of the earth.
Pablo Aimar at Benfica. Played with JPA at River Plate and Valencia bought him for £22m a little while befor we bought JPA. I liked him, and just did a wiki search. Seems he has been hampered with injury a bit, but has been weighing in with a few goals and assists over the last few years. He is 31, so perhaps a few years left in him?

I think Bridge is a player I used to rate, but has lost his way after a couple of wrogn moves (Chelsea and not playing, same at Man City and then West Ham).  I think in the right environment he could get back to the player he was at Southampton, which was a good leftback.

That's a long time ago John.

There's not many players I'd sign on the basis of their form eight years ago.

I'm not even sure he was particularly great even then, his England selection probably owed as much to the infamous lack of left footed players around that era as anything else.

Totally fair comment. Trouble is, we're talking about a player who's best form was, what, seven years ago? Southampton was way back now. And you start to thinking... perhaps here was just a decent footballer who had a purple patch of 18 months or so. Since then he's been pretty average everywhere else. He's around the 30 year mark, will want sizeable wages. A loan signing when you're short and exposed at left-back, sure, but I'd hope with a full summer ahead we could do much better.

Which doesn't mean Liam Ridgewell, by the way!

What's wrong with playing Luke at left-back next season, with Baker/Clark backing him up ?

That Hesageezer from Celtic looks good whenever I've seen him. Could be the solution to our left-back problem.

Look slike Carlos Cuellar will still be an AVFC player come next season as he has under gone surgery on his knee and will be out of action for 3 months (so basically the summer to recover).  Cant see many clubs taking a risk on a player so soon after having surgery?

Quite, a inform Luke Young is a bloody good full back on either side of the pitch.

I like Luke Young. My concern with pegging him as No.1 LB next season is that he missed quite a lot of this campaign with injury and, now the wrong side of 30, is likely to be picking up knocks moving forward. I like him as a versatile defender, covering both full-back positions if needed and fit.

I don't think he offers enough going forward to suit Gezza's desired style of play.  THink what Walker gives us and he'll be after a left footed version of that.

Of course, that could all change in the manager does.

i think Luke Young is better off being a right back not Left back.  although he did a decent job there, i still think we need someone who plays there week in week out.

He's also out of contract this summer, no guarantee he will be here anyway!

A poll in The Mail has 31% wanting Given as our next keeper and 29% wanting Foster. I wouldn't mind either, Foster is younger but I hear Given is a good character to have at a club. But why not test out how much Ajax want and how much Stekelenburg fancies playing in The Premier League?

Can't see him leaving a title winning side about to play in the Champions League for us to be honest.

He is definitely an attacking full back though. A bit dodgy defensively.

However, if the alternative is Wayne Fucking Bridge I'll look past it.
