Best season was 1976-77 ... after 1981-83 of course.
When Gray, Deehan and Little were in their pomp anything seemed possible.
IrishVillain: you're right in many ways - 'keeper, at least 1 CB and a LB are absolutely imperative.

The parallels with 94/95 are clear. An underperforming squad that has served us well in previous seasons is in need of major surgery.

As in the summer of 1995 we all expect the deadwood to leave and lots of exciting new players to arrive.

It's always sad to see an era come to an end and I think we can all say it's been one with more highs than lows. Players like Carew, NRC, Friedal, Petrov have been with us through our best few seasons since the mid 1990s and we'll all have happy memories of the past few years.

I think the MON years are more comparable to the first part of JG's stint, 98-2000; a couple of sixth place finishes, a cup final and another semi-final.

Not everyone will go, some of the stalwarts (Stan, NRC, Friedel) may be retained for another season or 2 ?
Tossers like Beye, Ireland & Warnock can just do one

Gervinho could be our new Yorkie

#10 will be free. Benty needs a partner. Make it happen.

No, Neymar wants it. Gervinho can have 7 if Young leaves.
Ireland the joker can hand Bent the #9 shirt before he leaves.

A lot of people seem quite excited about this summer's transfer dealings. I think we've  got quite a job on our hands. Houllier has already spent quite a bit, and I can't imagine we have tons of cash.

Our defence has been appalling. We need a left back and quite possibly new centre back, right back and keeper or perhaps 2. Our best centre mid this season could leave on a free too, and young looks very likely to go.

That's up to 7 players to replace with probably less than £25m coming in, even if we manage to sell Ireland and warnock (£17 for young, £5m for Ireland, £2m for warnock, tho we may sell cuellar and get about £4-5m I guess).

That feels pretty challenging unless randy's prepared to throw in another £20-30m again.

Given poor attendances, weaker league and cup performances, and losing our sponsors, I'm a bit surprised at the optimism some have.

We could be relying a fair bit on our youngsters next year, but I only really have a great degree of confidence about albrighton. Delph and Clark could do very well but it's a bit of an unknown. I don't think we can depend on the others who've been on loan, next season. None of them seem to have done much in the championship.

We haven't set ourselves up particularly well to nail down a lucrative shirt sponsor deal either, although if we can finish the season on a high and say make it into the Top 8 then that would help. Jaguar ? Cadburys ? Land Rover ?

Quite a gloomy assessment to be honest and not one I subscribe to.
Firstly, Randy will back the manager as he always has done and Houllier has only really spent the Milner money plus a few extra bob so far.
Wages issue aside (something being addressed) Villa are one of the top 20 clubs in Europe in terms of income. Its a horse worth backing.
Lots of players will be leaving and we'll get reasonable (rather than going rate) fees for some of them. This will also free up a lot of cash in wages for new players.
There will be quite a number of good bosman deals about in the summer and if Houllier is still calling the shots he'll be able to come up with a few canny bargain deals besides.

I have no doubts that Clark, Albrighton, Bannan, Delfouneso, Lichaj, Weimann, Gardner and perhaps Herd and Johnson will feature in the squad next season. I wouldn't be too concerned about what they've done in the championship either. Gabby made no impact during his loan spells yet became a serious top flight player, even representing his country. Its just about getting experience at this stage.

There will be a lot of comings and goings and by the end of it all we could be completely revamped and reinvigorated and back challenging as force in this league. There's plenty of reason and justification for excitement. No guarantess of anything though and yes, it will be quite a job but very much achievable.

I'm trying to look at the summer with a positive spin on things. Sure GH is up to date with all the Bosman deals, may have some tied up already. He should be able to generate a few quid with shifting a few of the stiffs out,Randy has always backed the manager,so he may give him a little bit more.

And Albrighton,Clark,Delph,Fonz,Wee Barry and hopefully Gardner will get 15 - 20 games again next season.

I'm not saying it's all doom and gloom. Just that we've got a job on just to be as strong on paper in September as we are now (young, walker, NRC, friedel being the biggest risks). How much would it cost to bring in players at that level? £40m before we even looked at a left back? And only one of those exits would bring in any cash at all?

Well, not necessarily £40m. That's what I mean about Bosmans.
I'm confident the kids can take up a lot of the slack that the squad flotsam and jetsam moving out will cause and that Houllier will find the deals we need otherwise.
For instance Taye Taiwo is a top left back and is available for nowt. Therer will be bargains to be had whilst still improving the quality of the side.

Money will need to be spent though, sure. And I think it will.

Goal.com has a list of forthcoming Bosmans. Not sure how reliable it is and some contracts may have been given since it was written. It has Luke Young on the list, which I didn't realise.

http://www.goal.com/en/news/11/transfer-zone/2011/01/19/2310634/premier-league-bosman-list-all-the-players-available-for-free-in-

Players it may be worth thinking about:

EPL: Elmander, Larsson, Seamus Coleman, Owen (I hope not), Ab Faye, Mensah, Rob Green.

Spain: M Diarra (Real Madrid), Dragutinovic, D Navarro (not really heard of any of the others)

Italy: Appiah, Suazo,

France: Taiwo, Douchez,

Germany: Altintop, Castelen, Trochowski, Rakitic,

Holland: Emanuelson,

Of that list, I'm most tempted by Emanuelson, Taiwo, Trochowski, Elmander.

Owen arriving on a free worries me i must say. Hopefully GH has done his homework and realises he's finished.

I'd rather take Elmander to replace Heskey.
