The Le Harve striker is probably the more likely target..

I think if we stay up we will buy a lot of defenders, a goalie or two, a number ten and some squad players for midfield.

Nothing spectacular or any big names but good solid players capable of doing a job. Mostly in their early twenties. Add these guys to some of the players Houllier has already brought in and our young players and we should have a more than solid team to make a tilt at the top eight assuming everything works out.

I'd argue we already have that, just the manager that seems to be the problem!

Did we have a sell on clause for Gary Cahill?

Today's load of old fanny

Bolton are resigned to selling £20m-rated England defender Gary Cahill in the summer with Arsenal, Tottenham, Aston Villa and clubs on the continent all interested.
Full story Daily Mirror

Aston Villa are ready to launch another attempt to sign Blackpool midfielder Charlie Adam, as long as Gerard Houllier remains as manager.

Robert Pires is weighing up whether to retire or to play in Qatar, Australia or the United States when his short-term contract with Aston Villa expires this summer.

Meanwhile, Villa are monitoring 21-year-old Le Havre striker Ryan Mendes da Graca.

You missed this from the BBC rumours

Manchester United are closing in on a £25m move for England forward Ashley Young, who has rejected a £80,000 a week new deal from Aston Villa.

Back page of The Sun today. £25 million would be nice .  Fergie see's him as the long-terml successor to Giggs. I don't think so.

I must be the only one who doesn't get Charlie Adam, IMHO he stands out in a poor side but nothing more.

Like Thompson and Curcic for us / Carrick at ManYoo / Jenas as Spurs / Sidwell and Parker at Chelsea they look Jonny Average if they try to step up a level and get lost.

You missed Sidwell. These blokes do well when the team is built around them but not seem to sink without trace at a club where they won't be so well accommodated.

We have Delph and Bannan who have the potential to be even better and we need to give them game time rather than signing another player who may or may not work out blocking their path.

Quote from: The Sun
Man United are preparing a £25million bid for Ashley Young.

SOLD!

All the best Ash.

25 million let's snap SAF's arm off and while we are at it can we snap his neck too?

The more I see him the more I can see that we need a tougher midfielder to play next to Makoun. His tackling is poor but he can do well as a ball player.

Agree entirely.
Need someone with him who can 'dig in'
I also think we need to look at ditching this 2 wingers routine.

I don't think we'll have a choice when Downing and Young both depart for greener pastures.

Christ knows who'd they'd bring in to replace them, because mark my words, even if we're relegated, they'll keep him on.

If SHA go down I'd give them the majority of the Ashley money for Foster and Dann. N'Zogbia to replace Ash.

We do need a tackler, Joey Barton would be ideal bar the obvious issues. We need a captain in there. Parker will probably go Spurs.

There's gotta be someone out there?

I think we also need someone who can drive forward through the middle and create chances without going out to the wings all the time.  Ash, that person is not you!  I was hoping Ireland would be that player for us but clearly not, Delph perhaps?

Jamie O'Hara was excellent again for Wolves against us playing that position. I think when Ash goes, Albrighton and Downing will be the wide options, but then through the middle we will look different. Makoun needs a few months to get up to pace with the league. Interesting we were in for Lorenc Cana (sp) that did a season at Sunderland and captained them - hard as nails from memory - in Jan, and Charlie Adam. Both would improve us a lot in the centre of midfield IMO. Downing has been saying how much he is happy and wants to stay, so I think he probably will.
