Just found this pic of the game.    The Holte doesnt look that full compared to other games in the 70's 80's   but 57,000 must have meant it was packed?  Is that record for the 2nd Division?

Nowhere near. We got more than 60,000 before the war against Coventry, and in 1974-75 Manchester United's average was over 50,000.
Can't find on the net which game was the highest for the 2nd division - over to you guys!

And the 3rd and 4th divisions while you're at it! :)  I think we are pretty close for the 3rd - or was a Sheffield derby game?

My abiding memory is, that despite making two weeks earnings as a profit I did not have enough money for the night service fare on the 14 bus to get home.

How come?

2-1 Blackpool. Injury time DJ Campbell goal wins it after Villa leading for most of the match.

Ive got a bit giddy and backed up to win by more than 2 or more goals - 3/1. Would like to see Reo Coker playing, he had a fine game against Wigan but hasnt started since. Big mistake not to play him in OT imo, contract issue or not. Really feel Blackpool will play into our hands by being so open and hopefully Bent and Young can continue their England form.

Ha! Yeah, great story, but what happened?

Either you didn't carry the profits around with you or that was some fucking booze up!

Pravda:

"Gerard Houllier will be happy to shake hands with Ian Holloway this afternoon - and will even give him a hug if he wants."

Ain't that sweet?

I'd prefer him to punch him in the face

Am absolutely gutted, I've had food poisoning all week and have not made the trip. 

I really think we will win this one, haven't a clue by what score though!

This is how I remember the Sunderland game:

The Blackpool game was brilliant, we were building up so much momentum, a League Cup win, great football and heading for promotion, nobody wanted to miss a game no matter where it was. It was a midweek game and I remember my dad coming to my school to take me out early. As usual they'd be loads of cars with Villa scarves hanging out the window as we drove up. We were Saunders' Army and there was no stopping us as we invaded Blackpool. Magical times.

I was in the Holte under the V floodlight for that game and it was indeed heaving. You simply couldn't move.

Fantastic story, Steamer, thanks for that. Now that's what football is all about.

Before my time, sadly (my first game wasn't till 1978), so the only times I had the pleasure of being able to drink on the bus to away games were my years spent in Germany. Where you can get a fair bit down your neck if the away ground is 8 hours away.

Blackpool is a dump.  I know it's 'out of season' and they are doing something to the prom, but it's still a dump.
