Isn't this just the 'technical director' job under another name?

As long as he doesn't give advice on penalty taking, things should be ok.

Not sure what all the derision is for to be honest. Seems like an intelligent guy, and something like this, rather than management, could well be ideal for him.

Always seemed too decent to be a manager. Hopefully this will work out for him and grudgingly, for the national team.

I was surprised when I heard this but he's a clever enough bloke and as an ex-Villa player I hope it works out for him.

Whenever we have that frequent "the FA is rubbish beyond belief" argument, which usually involves suggesting that people at the top need replacing, I always wonder how Trevor Brooking manages to not only dodge having the finger pointed at him, but get put forward as the person who will "sort it".

Surely he's been there long enough to have done something by now? Or maybe he's as useless as the rest of them and equally responsible for the consistent failure to achieve anything.

I like Southgate as a player, one of the best defenders we've had.  It's almost 10 years since he moved on, it really doesn't seem that long.

Is this a made up, scapegoat job in disguise? What does he actually have to do?
