can someone help me out here. Not sure if I dreamt this or whether it really happened.

I'm sure I can remember going up to Goodison in the days when we had the green and black Asics away shirt. Refs used to wear green shirts as well at the time.

Can someone confirm that the ref and linesmen ended up changing into the white Everton away kit to avoid the colour clash? Anyone else remember this? could be wrong, but I seem to remember it was a night game

Bingo!!! It was Guy Whittingham's debut, how could I forget that?

Although i still don't think this tells the whole story. I'm sure the ref changed shirts again in the second half into a white Everton one

Aston Villa could be forced to ditch their garish new away strip less than a month into the new season because it clashes with referees' shirts. A week after the Consumers' Association rapped soccer's replica kit market for exploiting fans with too frequent changes, Villa are in difficulty over their new green-and-black striped shirts, which they wore for the first time competitively at Everton last night. "If it's causing a problem we'll have to do something about it," said an FA Carling Premiership spokesman today. Action is likely after events at Goodison with Everton manager Howard Kendall complaining that the green in Villa's Asics shirts clashed with that of referee Alan Gunn and his linesmen. The Sussex official agreed to change into black, only to find in the second half that it was Villa who were confused into thinking he was one of their team-mates. "One of the problems is that the new referees' shirts are all one colour, whereas in the old days they had white collars and cuffs which helped them stand out," said Gunn. Premiership spokesman Mike Foster said: "Villa's manufacturers sent us a sample of the cloth in the summer and we could not see any difference, say, with Newcastle's black-and-white strip and the old all-black referee kit. Nobody used to object to that. "We discussed it with the referees and they were quite happy to accept our view. But we will have to see if it needs another look." The new Villa shirts, which have finer red-and-claret lines worked through, go on sale this Friday and souvenir shop manager John Greenfield said: "We have 4,000 on order and we could do anything up to £40,000 worth of business in a day with something like this. "We are only giving fans what they want. They regard these kits as leisurewear nowadays." One man who did look good in the new shirt was Villa's latest recruit Guy Whittingham, who hopes his match-winning debut goal at Goodison will keep him in the side for the Midlands derby against Coventry in 10 days' time. The former soldier begged for his Premiership promotion after scoring 47 goals for Portsmouth last season and soon rewarded Ron Atkinson's £1.2million gamble. "I really wanted this chance. The confidence has always been there in my ability and I just had to persuade someone to take me up on it," said Whittingham.

I remember a night game when we beat Everton 2-0 with a predominantly black side, something like 8 of the side were "non-white". It caused quite a stir if I recall because historically, Everton had few black players over the years.

Big Fat Ron was in charge, but none of the players that night, and I'm sure Ron would agree, showed any signs of being lazy fuckin'...........bastards.

I can confirm that it was at Everton too as it was one of my first away days, the huge flags were going back and forth in the old away end at Goodison, what a great night.
