Villa Brighton 1971 footage
« on: January 21, 2011, 04:31:02 PM »

Nice stuff here. My Brighton supporting mate has spent the last year going on about how last season's FA Cup meeting was such a close game when really we should have been well out of sight before their very late second goal. Anyway, trawling through youtube watching clips of that game i  found this
which may bring back some memories for some of you.

Love the clip, the great kit, the blue numbers, the ROOOAAARRR from the Holte and seeing Andly Lochhead running down their defender, aaaahhhh!

Yes the Holte was on the right!

I was at that match - can't believe how much pace Andy Lockhead had.

We should bring back the blue numbers. I am sure we had blue numbers on the AST 95-96 kit? Or was it just the players names? Anyway, it looks good.

Yeah you are right, we did have blue numbers then, but I think the premier league has a contract and they are all the same now.

Ah, and seeing the clips of the record crowd for the old 3rd division on the home page, the pitch looked  worse than a local parks league pitch. Men were men eh lets swing that lamp.

Judging by what I saw in the match at White Hart Lane last weekend Andy Lochhead would have been sent off for the way he went past that Brighton defender! I was at that match by the way, great crowds.

Checking the records, I was surprised to see that the attendance was just over 25,000. Still massive by 3rd division standards but it was early season and the attendances really took off as the season continued and we swept everybody aside.

Brighton were one of the stronger teams that season along with Notts County and Bournemouth. In fact this was our only win against them in the 4 games over the two 3rd division seasons. I remember the away game at the Goldstone better, an Easter game with us running away with the league and Brighton in the race for the 2nd promotion place.Their ground was absolutely rammed and they beat us. I remember Chico Hamilton was up in the main stand looking out at the ground an hour or so before kick off smoking a ciggy, again I checked the records and he didnt play that day so I suppose we can let him off.

You utter, utter bastards. The linked video was great, but on the same page was footage from the Chelsea game where a 15 year-old me was gripping hold of the railings on the Holte (just to the left of Colin Withers goal in the second half) as they belted 6 past us. What's worse, that clip doesn't even show Tony Hateley's two goals that briefly made it 2-4. Boooo!

Brilliant. Thanks for posting. I was 6 months old then and don't remember it at all but it was sure great to watch.
