If it was Liverpool or Chelsea that had just spent this amount of money on DB I get the feeling that the tabloids would be saying things differently. Looking at the positives. That he's a great goal scorer and that finally he's being given the chance he deserves at a top club. That the money is typical for an English proven striker. Where as because it is us that's spend the money then instead of it showing wer're still a force. are showing ambition it's that the world gone mad!!

We can't get in touch with Holloway, he's put the ring on and turned invisible.

He's bobbing about on a boat in Morecambe Bay, using his feet as paddles

Poor Carol.  An intelligent, likeable broadcaster, with a career spanning many years, and all that anybody thinks of when her name is mentioned on H&V is her beskidded keks.
The ghastiliness of Carol Vorderman

Now THAT's off-topic.

I like right wing older ladies. I'm a naughty liberal boy and I need discipline.

Hmmm... better keep that one to myself.

This is very true. It's also a mark of our lack of self esteem as fans when we question the club making a huge signing. I wonder whether some of the people here who criticised RAL in the Summer for supposedly having a sell-to-buy policy are now saying that we are spending too much? I can't see what the fuss is about as this is the bulk of the cash is from the Milner sale, and it's going to address a serious problem which has held us back as a club for a few years - scoring more goals. Some of the suggestions here that we could sign 3 or 4 players for the money like Kitson (not good enough for Stoke) or Zigic (not even good enough for the Blues) are the sorts of decisions which would lead us to relegation.

Houllier has moved to address the areas of weakness in the squad which MON would not have done i.e. quality and mobility in midfield, full back cover and more goals. As fans we have recognised these areas of deficiency for well over a season but they are problems which many PL teams have and which are very expensive to resolve. I'm very happy that the club has taken the decision to find the right personnel rather than just looking at the cost, and should MON have been allowed to use this money to buy Keane and McGeady then we would not have been much better off than we are now but with a big addition to the wage bill.

Another thing to look at is that we've done to Sunderland what Man City have done to us twice.

& what we're about to do to Blackpool

Very true.

There are ways and means of pinching players though - I'd hope we went about it the right way and spoke to the club first!
We can't get in touch with Holloway, he's put the ring on and turned invisible.

The problem now is the bar has been set higher and Charlie Adam will now be worth £20m in Holloway's eyes.

Shit, I was getting aroused reading that.

Exactly, and if Milner is worth £26m then Bent is worth £20m+.

Not quite - Bent will be our star player as much as he was SUnderland's. Barry and Milner became support acts at Man City and their wage costs/transfer fees were huge compared to what they gave Man City on the pitch. I take your point, but I think its slightly different.

Who is Timothy Abrahams and why are we assuming that his figure is the correct one?

Colonel Abrahams has just issued a statement alleging that he is trapped, like a man in a cage.
Father Abrahams asks "Vere are you all comink from?""

Am I the only one thinking that Stephen Ireland might enjoy playing alongside a player with great movement such as Bent?

Been said a million times but if we could get him playing:

                                            Friedel

                  Walker     Dunne      Samba   Figureoa

                                 Makoun      Delph / Adam

          Albrighton               Ireland                 Young

                                            Bent

I would like to see Ireland get his head down and try and get back in to the side when fit, I hope it happens, there's a class player in there somewhere, better than any other central midfield attacking option we've currently got. I can't see anyone signing him, so we may as well compromise with him and get him playing.
