For £18mil you could sign a couple of striker like, Kevin Doyle, Zigic, Frazier Campbell, Dave Kitson...the list goes on. I'd rather go all out and get Bent, he'd outscore them all together.

He said MON could have signed an £18m striker in August 2009, but he decided to buy 3 defenders, to replace the 3 he'd previously signed.
Doubtless his national media mates will say MON wanted Bent, but Randy said no.

I like what Mat Kendrick just tweeted.

Which wouldn't have been a problem if he had sold those three defenders and re-invested the money!

Another thing to look at is that we've done to Sunderland what Man City have done to us twice.

& what we're about to do to Blackpool

Very true.

There are ways and means of pinching players though - I'd hope we went about it the right way and spoke to the club first!

Exactly, and this is the point that Collymore missed on Talkshite last night.
You COULD buy 3 decent players for £18M.
But then 3 decent players will all be on 50K per week each.
DB will be on 80K - reportedly.
Thats a difference of 70k per week over £3.6 million per year.
£3.6 million per year over an average of a 3 year contarct = £10.8 million JUST ON wages.
Its also what MON failed to understand I guess.

We can't get in touch with Holloway, he's put the ring on and turned invisible.

Plus we've signed "decent" players in the past (Sidwell, Beye, Ireland).

Mat Kendrick just tweeted something to this effect.

2009 - Bent joins Sunderland for 10m.

2009 - MON buys Warnock, Dunne, Collins - total 17m - to replace Knight, Davies, Shorey - total 17m - who he'd bought over the previous two years. We also spent 8m on Cuellar.

Meanwhile the main striker purchase around that time was Marlon.

MON got plenty right as well - Cuellar for instance from the above - but if anything demonstrates how lop sided his transfer policy was, then that does.

Don't worry - we'll be able to detect his West Country witticisms from miles away.

Maybe not the time for this, but the defense (that admittedly he bought) was falling apart following the injuries to Laursen and Bouma, so was a greater priority than a striker at that time, IMO.

If anything the £12m spent on an injured Downing, wgo admittedly is looking good now, would have been better spent on Bent.

I also don't think the invisibility thing covers the gigantic chip on his shoulder.
