Defending corners
« on: January 07, 2011, 08:57:20 PM »
Has anyone else noticed how poor we are at defending corners and set pieces ? On Wednesday I sat next to a couple of lads and we discussed this at length - it was the same when MON was here.
We fail to leave anyone upfield thus allowing the attacking team to bring all their players up to our box. We should leave our fastest players at least on the half way line.
On Wednesday there were two Sunderland defenders waiting on the edge of the box waiting for the ball to be played to them - no one was marking up whatsoever.
If we left one up front it means those two players would have had to hold their positions at the back. Leave two up front and they have to leave three back.
Its not rocket science - you would expect so called coaches to pick up on this.

I heard the other day that we've conceided more headed goals than anyone else, that always use to be a strong point of ours.

One of my reasons for wanting Samba! We are significantly worse when Heskey is not about too, he is our best corner defender on the near post. Dunne and Collins mark zonally and are very rarely near the ball, and quite often we are scrambling them out.

Yep said that to my brother on Wednesday, no one seemed to attack the ball and clesr it out the area, the ball seemed to drop in the area and then it was a panic to clear it????

We used to be good at defending set pieces now i do get worried when we concede in and around the box.
