best Villa team of the last 20 years
« on: January 06, 2011, 03:34:57 PM »
to take my mind off the current state of doom and gloom about the club, I got to thinking about the best side made up of players of the last 20 years. This lot wouldn't lose 1-0 at home to Sunderland...

Bosnich
Mellberg Laursen God Bouma
Cowans Barry
Milner Platt Young
Yorke

subs: Friedel, Staunton, Southgate, Townsend, Angel, Agbonlahor, Merson

Daley instead of Young for me but yeah that's pretty good.  Not sure about Gabby on the bench either, Saunders over him I'd say.

Alan Wright instead of Bouma at left-back.

I'm going for a cheeky 4-3-3

Bosnich
Charles - McGrath - Southgate - Wright
Daley - Platt - Merson
Yorke - Dublin - Atkinson

I've been watching Villa for 15, and Milner only just makes the bench in my team.

Thats pretty good,i'd have Delaney at Rb,its a shame his injuries harmed his career as when he was at full fitness he was a great player.

As I struggled to narrow down the best 11 Villa performers over 20 years I've gone off on a tangent and picked my team purely on Fantasy League points (at a guess!) earned over that time.....

                    James
Milner  McGrath   Southgate   Staunton
        Ginola  Merson  Barry  Pires
                Yorke   Dublin

Struggled to think of a right-back so adopted the Villa approach of not having a full back there rather than go for Luke Young, Aaron Hughes or Steve Watson who'd probably get in on points.
I'm sure Dunney would statistically get the nod for centre-half but I've deducted 1,000 points for every own goal.
The two left-wing frogs will have to keep switching and Friedel, Phillips, Heskey & Crouch will be banging on my door when they see the teamsheet, but I can't keep everyone happy.

Bosnich
Delaney McGrath Laursen Staunton
Solano Cowans Milner Young
Yorke Dublin

Subs - James, Southgate, Barry, Taylor, Merson, Angel, Daley

I know, I know Solano is in there but he could take a free kick and worked well down the wing with Delaney.

I'm struggling to beleive that Taylor is only in a handful of teams here.  Either you are all too young to remember him or well I dunno lol. But Taylor will be the first name on my team sheet

This for me, Imagine Taylor, Platt and Merson in our midfield today.

If you're going on fantasy points it's got to be Schmeichal in goal, even if he was shit for us

I'd line up with wing backs because I think it's a system that served us well down the years with GT and Brian Little.

---------------------------Bosnich
-------------Laursen----McGrath-----Southgate
---Milner-----------------------------------------Staunton
-------------Merson-----Taylor (captain)-----Barry
----------------------Yorke-----Dublin

Subs: Friedal, Mellberg, Delaney, Petrov, Townsend, Saunders, Ashley Young,
