Nigel Spink in the heart
« on: January 04, 2011, 03:10:58 PM »

One of my 1st, and one of the  brightest, Aston Villa memories, is Nigel Spink coming for the injuried Rimmer in the European Cup final making a fantastic debut which would bring him to become an Aston Villa legend.
Now he's the Sunderland goalkeepers' coach, but I can't acclimatize to see him like an opponent, he'll always be in my heart for his footballing and human qualities, hero of a time when men were men and footballers were footballers. . . .  ;)

He seems to be doing an excellent job. Mignolet and Gordon have been among the best goal keepers in the league this season when they've played.

I feel the same when seeing a still 21 year-old looking Tony Daley on Wolve's bench.

Spink didn't make his Villa debut in the European Cup Final. He'd already played for the first team.

I meant that he made his debut in the EC. In absolute terms, Spink  made his debut against Nottingham Forest on Boxing Day 1979, and then  would not play another first-team game for over two years.

It was hard work seeing Spinky in the Blues' dugout over the past few derbies.  I'm glad he made the move to Sunderland!

Hopefully he will come out to help their back-up keeper warm-up at half-time and get a decent reception from the Holte End.

had a chat with spinky at the cross in oldswinford when he had done an evening with type thingy with dennis mortimer.
I asked hi about how he felt when super kev scored the winner against sha at the sty and he said he was overjoyed inside! it must be very difficult to be employed by evil when you have so much good inside you!

Everytime i see him on their bench,i think we must be able to find him a job at the Villa.

From someone on the other side of the World- I really hope Villa Park gives Spinksy a heroes welcome.

I remember being in the villa end at roker park in about 1985 and spinky coming over to have a chat with us after warming up - a really nice bloke and a villa legend for that night in rotterdam- glad he's not at blues anymore and I hope his name rings loud tomorrow night- he deserves the plaudits!

I remember around the early 90's during a goal kick and with the holte chanting "Spinksy, give us a wave" he promptly kicked and waved at the same time, such a top bloke.

Spinky is a legen. I watched the 94 final sitting next  to him behind the goal. When Savo hit the shot at the far end he was out of his seat as soon the ball left Savo's foot shouting  a  very slow scream   gggggggggggggggggggggggol!
