Interesting artical Dave.  A good read.

I'd love to say i was there, I wasn't, I couldn't be arsed to go, what with it being West Ham and London and all that. Sounds like a missed somethng special. bugger.

I enjoyed that Dave and it brings to mind other non high profile Villa players of time gone by.  Feel free to move this to another thread if you wish but it reminded me of another great goal I was fortunate enough to witness.  It was during the league cup run of 70-71 and was scored by Lionel Martin.  Now for our younger posters, Believe me I always thought that Lionel had most of the skills of George Best, seriously, but Lionel never knew the right time to pass which nine times out of ten made him look silly and a bad player.  Anyhow this goal he scored was I think against either Carlisle or Burnley I can't remember which but it was at the Witton end and as we all know back in the day when you could stand where you liked we were all territorial and stood in the same place week in week out, I always stood down the Witton about a third of the way up from the front and just to right of the goal area.  Now Lionel was surrounded by defenders with his back to the goal and nowhere to go and no one to pass to which he wouldn't have anyway but he somehow managed to shimmy first one way then the other get between all covering defenders and hit the ball goalwards, well I stood there with my hands in the air waiting to catch the ball as it soared over the bar, as that is where it was going but the next thing was I was looking at it nestling in the bottom corner of the net, no deflections or anything a superb piece of controled skill and the perfect finish.  One thing I forgot to add, Lionel had shoulders somewhere along the lines of Richard Dunne.  I've been privelaged enough over the years to witness some great goals down the Villa by both Villa and the opposition but for some unknown reason this one sticks in my memory.

Damn, I really wanna see it now. Surely someone recorded it on their android?

Great story though.

Sounds similar to the goal Mark Pembridge belted in against us in 1991.

I don't think that was caught on camera either, or at least I've never seen it replayed since that afternoon.

Must have been all of 40 yards easily, most of the Holte applauded.

Just reading the profile on that site, which match did you describe as 'complete shite' on Sky Fanzone?

The Merson last-minute winner at Everton.

I was a bit too young, but I have a crystal clear memory of reading the match report probably two years later at junior school, as it was on paper we used to get out when we had painting.

Peeing down with rain and a terrible game/performance up until then.

I was listening to the match live on the radio, absolute shocker, the goal was completely out of keeping with what went before.

I was there but split my time between watching the match and keeping an eye on the West Ham fans on the other side of the dividing ribbon that was supposed to act as crowd segregation back then!

Just mulling over the read. Probably a bit harsh to call him a journeyman. If I recall correctly he was part of the European Cup winning team, albeit in the earlier rounds. Correct me if I am wrong. Would he have then got a medal for this?

Also seem to recall he was in the first team prior to 80-81 and then after 80-81. Was he injured, or just not selected?

That one is right up there with the best goals I have ever seen live.
