Villa 2 Sheffield Wednesday 1

This was billed as the proverbial relegation 6 pointer.

Dion broke his neck and JG started his 6 match ban from the touch line.

I can remember quite a few things about this game, our two penalties being missed, Mersons great goal, the relief when Taylor headed us in front, DeBilde scoring for them

I'd be lying if I said I remembered anything about this game, which is a shame because I liked the Gregory era. I estimate that it was played the day after I'd travelled home from uni for the holidays with two massive sacks of washing and whatever else I couldn't fit in wound around the neck of my guitar, taped up and then covered in another bin liner.

Yes, Merson's goal was superb and I well remember the explosion of relief when ITVP scored.

Quite a pivotal day in our season when you think about it.

..DeBilde scoring for them

An example of Gregory's ''signing players who played well against us'' transfer strategy (see Hadji, Boateng etc.) His other strategy seemed to consist of over-spending on British players (MON must have been taking notes - though at least he bought young British players).

Yeah, went on to finish 6th and get to the League Cup semi (where MON's Leicester were ever so slightly less turgid than us) and the FA Cup final (the less said of which the better). Until last season this was our most successful year since Brian Little's days in charge.

I loved that season, although the kit wasn't the best

Aye.

There were a few parallels with the MON era.

One bright spell followed by years of effective but turgid football and big money spent on some decidedly average British players, or players close to their use by date.

I remember this match being an outing for my 11th birthday. And I think the ground was fairly empty. We got some shocking attendances around that time if I remember rightly.

I was in Florida for this match so i had to find out the result on the blackboard in the English pub at the EPCOT centre. Much needed win, a classic Merson goal and some awful penalties in this match.
