Villa v SHA followed by Villa v Blackpool
« on: November 10, 2010, 06:29:08 PM »
The first match as I started going down the Villa at home regularly was the infamous 2-4 v SHA in 1968 followed by ...Blackpool & the recent fixtures reminded me of those days. Thank God the SHA result wasn't the same this time round (though it wasn't much better!) but I'd take the same result v Blackpool tonight- we won 3-2, with Brian Greenhalgh scoring one of ours from an acute angle. Does anyone remember any more about that Blackpool match?

sorry Bernie I don't, but I remember the Villa winning away at Blackpool on 19th April 1975, I believe we won 3-1 which incidentally was on my birthday.

Yes Bernie I remember the match well, how spooky too..last night Villa winning 3-2 also.
Willie Anderson scored for Villa, eaqualising Ingram's opener, before 'Greenie' squeezed the ball in from a very tight angle, and Tommy Mitchinson headed for 3-1 before Blackpool's Suddick scored their second. It was a misty October day and the Greenhalgh/Godfrey partnership was in its early promise, they both scored three in their first four games as a partnership..but sadly it never got much further than the 1967-68 season, Greenhalgh was top scorer with 12, Godfrey with 10, and Villa's slump continued as we finished 16th in Division Two.
But to a starry-eyed Villa nut of 11, we were the best team in the world!
Villa's team that day was: Withers: Bradley, Aitken: Chatterley, Sleeeuwenheoek, Park: MacLeod, Mitchinson, Greenhalgh, Godfrey, Anderson
Sadly two of that team are no longer with us.

I'll let you know on Sunday, from my yacht.....
Thanks for the responses.
I was also at the 1975 match, stayed there for the weekend. (I've a feeling it was 3-0 not 3-1, might be wrong though) It nearly clinched promotion back to the 1st Division, we finally did it at Sheff Wed a few days later.
Oscar A, you've got some memory there, mine's more random, the only goal from the match I can remember is 'Greenie"'s.
Stumpy Macleod- I think he scored direct from a corner in a 2-1 win against Derby a few weeks later.....

The 1974 game was definitely 3-0 to Villa, as it had it on the BBC website as the last match between the sides.

I have no idea regarding the 1968 game though.

I was at the 68 Blackpool game although I have to confess I can't remember much about it.

Tommy Mitchinson - those were the days, a player you knew next to nothing about and you only knew he had signed when you read about it in the papers.  There was always the prospect you thought we had signed a gem.

In my early days I can only recall Phil Woosnam and Peter Broadbent as names I already knew before they signed for us.

Oh...and God bless Slogger, one of my heroes.

I only know 3 of the players from that line-up and I think 2 of them are dead (the other one's Aitken).

Thanks for the Blackpool footage from 75, great memories.
We took over their ground that day, I remember everyone running and jumping in the sea afterwards thinking we were promoted after false rumours of Sunderland's score.
We did it a few days later though when Hillsborough was turned claret n blue. Would love to see some footage of that game if anyone has some. A night match in the days before segregation - I recall Wednesday fans turning up to find their Kop had been taken over by Villa.
Then on the Saturday Sunderland brought about 15,000 to Villa Park, thousands locked out in a 57,000 crowd and we stopped them winning promotion too.
