Which song teleports you back to a single Villa moment?
« on: November 04, 2010, 01:37:31 PM »
Not a song that reminds you of an era - but a song that takes you back to a single Villa moment in time.

Kerrang played Oasis 'Roll with it' yesterday afternoon and I was, as I always am when I hear that song, transported back in time 14 years to moments after we'd won the League Cup Final against Leeds and it was played over the old Wembley tannoy much to the delight of the singing and dancing Villa fans. The memory is so vivid I can clearly see mates standing next to me with tears in their eyes, sadly mates who've long since lost the faith and I rarely see them.

The only other song that seems to have this affect on me is The Fratellis 'Chelsea Daggers' which instantly takes me singing and dancing to the derbyshire tannoy with my lad down the rear steps of the away end at Pride Park following our five goal rout there a couple of seasons ago.

Anyone else got one?

LONG LIVE DODGEY SPONTANEOUS SINGING, DODGY DANCING AND DODGY TANNOY SYSTEMS!

Strangely, "You're All Alone" by Rita Coolidge.

Whenever I hear that song, it reminds me of hearing it at half time at Villa Park. Not the sort of thing you expect to be played at a football match at all.

Great topic

Footsteps by Womack and Womack reminds me of standing in the Leppings Lane end at Hillsbrough in 1988. I remember it coming on over the crackling PA sytem.

Also, Automatic by the Pointer Sisters takes me back to the bottom of the Holte, right hand corner, in 1983.

No idea why those 2 songs and situations are so vivid in my memory

I wasn't at the 96 LC Final - I watched it on TV with my father - but I'm reminded of the occasion whenever I hear "New York, New York." Which thankfully isn't all that often!

Blimey, don't think I have that good a memory! For some strange reason though, any early to mid 70s soul music - Isaac Hayes,, Teddy Prendergast et all - always makes me think of Villa Park, flared trousers, V neck jumpers and long hair. I've got not idea why but I only need to hear the opening bars of Shaft to be transported back to those happy days of queueing from about 1pm outside the Holte End to get in...

I vividly remember it being played after his home debut against Liverpool.

Hmmm.

I've got two for this and they are roughly from the same era, I think.  I used to sit up in The North Stand, as a kid, in the late eighties and I can remember a match against Nottingham Forest.  Half-time came and the Villa DJ started playing Jackie Wilson's "Reet Petite" to which all the Forest fans below us started to join in and sing along to the chorus.   Whenever I hear that song I'm brought back instantly to Villa Park and looking down at those Forest fans bouncing about.

The other song is "Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life".  I can remember the Holte End mocking Man Utd and Alex Ferguson with that one after we beat them 3-0.  Graham Taylor was the Boss and Fergie looked to be on the way out of Old Trafford (it was the good old days before the marketing men belched up the nonsensical "Theatre of Dreams" stuff).

I was more than a little miffed to see the Man Utd fans adopt the song, themselves, (and get all the credit for it) in the subsequent weeks and months of that season.

Whenever I watch "Life Of Brian" my feelings swing between ones of appreciation for peerless, insightful comedy and ones of a rabid, bile-filled anger towards Man Utd, Alex Ferguson and the respective progress of both clubs since then.

If I boil it down, I suppose both songs remind me of the more simple times of the pre-Premier League/Sky TV era.

I'm kind of disgusted at myself for writing this but I'll always associate 'Saturday Night' by Whigfield with Villa v Inter in 1994, my second-ever game at Villa Park and it was playing as I walked into the stadium. Terrible tune, but so excited to be at VP ans what a night.
