What was the crowd - LCSF 1970?
« on: October 28, 2010, 12:57:22 PM »
I always thought there were 62500 inside Villa Park on the night we played Man Utd in the League Cup Semi Final, 2nd Leg, in 1970.
Quite often, even in Villa publications, the crowd is down as 58/59000. Last night's programme mentioned that it was 62500 and was our highest ever Villa Park attendance for a League Cup match.
I think I will settle for 62500 as it has a nice ring about it.
Once again, Andy Lochhead got a mention in the programme as the scorer of the first goal, with Pat McMahon getting the winner.

As far as I know it was always 62500, as an excited 13 year old in the ground that fantastic night it could have been any higher number you wanted to say. Never been able to find any footage of either leg on the net, there must be something somewhere.

Possibly my best night ever at Villa Park. For the game Grandad even gave me my only ever Villa bobble hat, and a scarf, as an early Christmas present. Was nicked by WBA fans at the Hawthorns a few years later. The b*****ds.

It was definitely reported as 62,500 at the time.

I always thought it 62,500 but my old Complete Record 1874-1992 lists it as 58,667. Wonder if it says the same in the new one?

Definitely 62,500 was the official attendance and trust me, many, many more clambered in, over or under turnstiles.

I was there. Now that was what footy should be about. Bedlam on the Holte.

If I could be transported back in time and to go to any Villa match in my lifetime that I didn't attend, this would be the one.

Another vote for 62,500- one of the useless statistics I retain in my head from before the faculties started to decline

The Complete Record was written by Tony Matthews, who tends to alter rounded-off attendance figures to make them more believable.

I was there and I agree.

Remember that we had gates of 12,000 not that long before, and we all became experts on estimating crowd figures.

Way more the official figure.

The excellent new Complete Record gives it as 62,500.
What a night! After Liverpool 5-1 my favourite Villa Park memory.

As an Holte Ender since the early 60s, that was the only time I ever stood at the Witton end, a night to remember along with the Denis Law sending off a few years earlier ...

Aston Villa 2... Man U 1

Aston Villa 4... Man U 0

GREAT TIMES
