His comments would mean more to me if he stated that he'd love to sign a contract extension on the same terms.

I am sure he is doing that, and I cannot blame him.  With Milner gone his leverage over the board is pretty strong however, as a club, we have to at some point say, "sorry we can't afford to pay you more each week".

Personally I am not sure Young is worth more than the £65k that he is reportedly on.  There is a chance that football wages are about to go through a bit of an economic correction - especially with Liverpool close to administration - so we should still play hardball with Young and get the best deal for villa rather than "JFDI".

I understand the sentiment but I have to disagree.  The second you start stalling on a contract the likes of City and Spurs start tapping players up.  Footballers hold all the aces in the modern game and refusing to offer an improved contract can and probably would be suicide.

I admit it is a double edged sword but if Young was tapped up we'd be able to buy a replacement, possibly two with the extra cash.

I'm not saying that we shouldn't offer him a contract, far from it.  I'm just saying we should not bow down to whatever he demands (and I'm sure we won't) as I think the power that footballers currently have will diminish over the next few years because there is less cash in the game.
