How are we so under the cosh at home against Bolton?

Three little digits: 4-4-2. We have the players, but our continuing to play this ridiculous system in its various forms just negates any qualities on the ball that we may have.

So what do you suggest we play with the players we have. And being as we are playing with 3 wingers at the moment and two strikers we are playing anything but.

I suggest 4-2-3-1, Downing out for NRC and more solidity in the midfield.

Also, it's 4-4-2 because of where the players are on the pitch. I don't care if Ash is nominally a winger, he's playing central in a 4-4-2 with Petrov there and it's suicidal.

We played a 4-5-1, 4-4-1-1 for most of the matches this season. It hasn't made any difference. You could even argue that Everton and stoke were the 4-2-3-1 that you are advocating.

The players didn't move off the ball for much of those games, and when they did it was so much more comfortable (more so against Stoke, where I thought we were unlucky).

The problem with the system we started today, as someone else mentioned, is that the 4 ahead of Petrov is absurdly advanced, leaving Stan totally isolated on the counter.

this is royally crap. I'm so glad Monday starts a new era at Villa. Can we please start playing possession football on the deck. We need a change in football philosophy so very badly.
Indeed, today was the legacy of MON. Good first 11 playing like shite.

Fixed.

Was that a bit of booing I heard?  I know we weren't great but I didn't think it deserved booing.

You might have felt different if you had actually paid to watch it.
That's fair enough if you regard supporting the team as a 'value for money' based thing.

If it hasn't you'd have to ask 'why not'? because it looks like an obvious best starting XI to me.

My issue with booing is that while I suppose people have the right to air their views, I hope those same people are prepared for the next few weeks being one of transition. It may not be pretty all the time, and booing our players will be very counter productive during that time as they learn new things. Even if people have paid to be there, I hope they realize that. It's not going to change immediately.

Perhaps naive but I anticipated we might have picked up a draw & win from
last two matches..........against opposition who are unlikely to be
challenging for European spots in May next year

As it turns out we have dropped 5 points and on current look more
likely to finish bottom 6 than top -

Thanks KMac ...........you made some mistakes which was to be
expected but overall I think the players let you down -

If it wasn't for last ditch blocks from Luke Young and smart saves from
Friedal the visitors today would have gone home with a decent away win-

Was it me or did Stephen Ireland do just that ONE thing before he was
subbed ? We already have passengers in the current team we certainly
don't need to carry any more-

At the final whistle I reacted along with many others of those that
stayed till the end by letting the players know what I thought of the
performance - I'm certainly not happy with myself but how else can I
show my displeasure (I've paid £450 up front so finding something
else to do on match day is not an option)

Hopefully Mssrs Houlier McAllister assisted by Villa legend Sid will wave
a magic wand - whether the current players will respond is another
matter

They needed booing. That was dross.
