Bogey teams

Wigan at home is the most bizarre one considering we win up there most seasons.

In the five home games we've played them at VP since they came up, we haven't scored in four of them!

In the early 70s 3rd division - Mansfield, Torquay and Walsall spring to mind. My first ever away game was a 3-0 drubbing at Fellows Park in 1970-71 where about 50% of the ground was Villa. We did finally muller Torquay 5-1 on our first home game after securing promotion at Bradford the week before but prior to that they had beaten us home and away and dumped us out of the cup.

Rest of the 70s - Burnley, Boro, Luton. Boro were perpetually the most boring team in the division with no away support and a gloom and depression would accompany their team coach from Ayresome Park prior to Stan Cummins scoring his annual winner at VP. Always a deathly experience and always in freezing conditions. And there was a spell in the mid 70s where the noses would always turn us over.

1980s - Liverpool, Man U, Notts County for a long time (it was a Howard Wilkinson thing I reckon as he was the same with Leeds and Wednesday against us)

1990s - Man U, Blackburn, Wimbledon, Newcastle (we could never beat them under Keegan), Leeds for a fair few years

2000 onwards - Man U anywhere, Arsenal (away in particular), Chelsea away, Man City, Wigan at home, Liverpool, Spurs away, Fulham away, W Ham away

To counter this we always seem to do well against Wolves, Albion, Coventry, Everton, Fulham at home. And Spurs, W Ham and Chelsea rarely win at VP

Grounds where I shudder at our record - Old Trafford, Craven Cottage, COMS, Sid James Park, White Hart Lane, Selhurst Park. I have been to the latter on many occasions against Wimbledon, Palace and Charlton and never seen us win there. I hate the place.

I remember in the 80s Notts Co been a bit of a bogey side, then we finally stuck 6 past them in a cup game IIRC.

Norwich away rarely makes me think of a Villa win.

Dec 1993 is the only away win at Norwich that comes to mind, we won 2-1 with Houghton and Saunders scoring for us and Sutton for them.

In fairness, just about everyone nearly always loses at Chelsea and Man U.

The annoying thing with Man City is they always used to beat us even when they were utter gash. Now they can afford anyone they like wins there might become as rare as wins away to their local rivals used to be before we started pissing all over them (100% record against them in our last, err..., one match there).

Last game of 1974/75, already both promoted along with Man Utd. We won there 4-1 leaving our two top scorers in the stand (Graydon and Little).
We beat them `away` at Wembley too 3 months earlier.

Last game of 1974/75, already both promoted along with Man Utd. We won there 4-1 leaving our two top scorers in the stand (Graydon and Little).

I also remember us playing them away in both cups in the mid 80s, in the space of about a week. I'm sure we won one (LC?) and lost one (FAC).

I wouldn't say arsenal away is much of a bogey ground. Since they have moved to the emirates they have won one, we have won two and the other 2 were draws that we should have won.

We have taken more points at Arsenal's new ground than any other visiting team.

Although we haven't won any of them, they all seem to have been decent games with plenty of talking points. Henry/Halsey freekick, the Pires lob, Zat Knights equaliser and last seasons game was entertaining too.

Teams I remember us not having a particularly good record against: Leicester (obviously), Boro, Palace, Coventry, Oldham and Southampton. Leeds were always a tricky opponent too

Coventry? My memory may be faulty but I felt we thumped them for years before they managed a win? We always took the piss at Highfield Road. Remember them bringing the League Cup one year (77?) - the home fans loved that!

Norwich away were always a bit of a bugger to beat in the 70's.
One match in particular sticks in my mind: Norwich 5 Villa 3 in the 75/76 season.
