the one thing that irritates me over the whole carroll to the bin dippers circus is that when we signed darren bent, backing the current manager with 18 million on the second highest prem scorer of the past 5 years, in the middle of the transfer window, to actually add to the options we had with the type of player we have missed for as long as i can remember, the media went potty over us and slated us to high heaven, calling it "over priced", a "panic buy", and "why didnt we back the previous manager", despite the fact that they then said it was the milner money to cover their "sell to buy" theories, completely ignoring the fact that milner actually left the club, AFTER o'neill had chucked his toys.... and totally ignoring the fact that o'neill had the opportunity to buy bent for 12 mil not so long ago, and ended up picking up more expensive crap like warnock, beye, harewood, etc...

liverpool back their current manager with 35 million on a player who has 14 in 41 in the top flight, wasnt even the second highest scorer in the championship last year, has aggression off the field problems, to replace arguably one of the finest strikers in world football, on the final day of the transfer window, and a player who needs a winger type supply to be beneficial, and its a great buy, and a sign that kenny dalglish has the full backing of the board, and world peace is coming due to the fact that tony fecking gale can do silly little tactic diagrams on skumsportsnews giant ipad... no mention of it being a panic buy, no question to why hodgson wasnt backed with this money, etc etc..

ignoring the obvious fact and logic is ok when it comes to the villa, but dare they upset the scousers for fear of a "boycott"... not having a go at liverpool, or their fans here, but it makes me sick how the sycophantic media masterbation is there for certain "favourites", and other clubs, have metaphorical feces dumped on them from a great height....

partly the reason why i have now cancelled my sky sports subscritption... and they can stick their movies up their anus too... still, small print 31 days cancellation timeline while they earn interest on my money..... tossbags..

Anyone remember that Geordie who had a massive picture of Andy Cole tattoo'd on his thigh, a month before he left for Man Utd.

Cretins, all of them.

The ever-diminishing in my eyes Henry Winter:

Quote
So ignore, if possible, the inflated fee. English players are invariably overpriced. But Carroll has a swagger that should make him thrive the higher he climbs. Unlike the £24 million Bent, Carroll contributes even when not scoring. He closes down, he links, he creates, he clears when back for corners.

Creates? CREATES? If your idea of creating is a knock-down from a long-ball, then sure, he creates. For the love of god, you'd think he were talking about David bloody Villa, not a less intelligent version of Kevin Davies. Besides, Bent does contribute when not scoring, as his channel-running and high-pressure against Wigan testifies. Mind you, I wonder what they'd be saying if it were the other way around? The favouritism is utterly naked.

Edit: in the previous paragraph he says "There was something in the way he strolled into England training before last year’s France friendly that hinted at a class apart, an aura. Where Ashley Young and Darren Bent seemed inhibited, Carroll flourished." That's just a straightforward dig.

Henry Winter seems to have had some kind of breakdown of late.

In real life he looks much, much older than his picture byline.

It's as though he's got to be seen to be going against the grain. Everyone thinks the Carroll fee is a bit mad so he has to say the opposite. In any case they haven't bought him to create, they've paid the money for one thing only; goals.

It's clearly a huge gamble spending that much but then with Torres leaving in a hurry they didn't have a lot of time to worry about it. If he scores them 100  in the next three years few will grumble but, unlike the proven Bent, he has yet to demonstrate that he's capable of that.

I agree with you on all fronts except this, Chris. There isn't a single player bought by a top club, certainly not for top money, who is bought for one attribute. They have to be multi-functional or they're too limited and not good enough (for the record, I think Bent is far more multi-functional than anyone's likely to give him credit for).

Fair point, Monty, but if his overall game is good and he doesn't score the goals he'll be considered a flop.

Monty, if you are signing a striker the sole concern is that the striker strikes.  If he has other attributes to his game all well and good but above all else he has to score goals.

Rooney is getting away with it at the moment because Berbatov is finding his form but I don't doubt for one minute that Rooney's lack of goals is a concern for ManU.

Congratulations to Liverpool on signing the new Emile Heskey

If we'd spent £18M let alone £35M on a young striker with less than 1 year's experience in the top flight, who has been currently injured for over a month and is still out injured, and is also one strike away from a custodial sentence, we'd be laughed out of the league.
