When you sign any player you're buying into a percentage - their proven worth to a team against their potential worth to a team. Bent's proven worth is much much higher than his potential worth because he's repeatedly proven at this level. Carroll's potential may be great but it's a massive price to pay for such a small percentage of proven worth.

To be honest if offered bent or Carroll I'd have gone for bent as he is a natural goalscorer and has good temperament and has performed at this level for many years- Carroll is a good player no doubt but at the price not near as good a deal as bent will hopefully be.
