Carrick is a good player, who might not look a world beater at Man U but would be class at Villa, like he was at spurs.
I wouldn't have him in our current midfield.

So I would certainly hope he's not our idea of the upgrade that we need to our current midfield.

Depends really, if we are definately going 3 in the middle i can see the point. Longterm it would allow Delph to be the attacking midfielder with Makoun and Carrick sitting behind. If we get Adam, i think it will be him as the attacking midfielder with Makoun and Petrov sitting behind, Delph eventually taking over from Petrov.

It's about getting the team be a better unit.

This means having central defenders who can defend and are comfortable on the ball, these don't come cheap.

If you watch Spurs / Citeh / Arse / ManUre, they see 4 teams who have 10 outfielders who are 'footballers' and teams that can pass across, back, forward comfortably - we must be aiming for that.

Of course, having 'end product' is always the most important thing, so Benty signing is a massive boost to the team.

Downing is quality, we should keep him certainly, but we need a left back who can play this way, and someone else in midfield - someone who can bring defence into attack and shoot when in the right position - wed don't do enough of that.

To be honest, I haven't seen enough of Adam (aka Zidane) to know whether he's the man.

In fairness he looked good on the highlights last night, delivers quick direct slick passing in advanced areas. I have also seen him lose the ball in deeper midfield positions, so i would definately play him in the 'Zidane position', attacking midfield.

I mentioned last week that representatives from Villa had gone to the Asian Cup to talk to Honda`s agent. Would be a brilliant signing. He is on top of his game and our asian profile and shirt sales would be worth millions ......

Carrick is bobbins though. Can't run, can't tackle, can't shoot. He can pass the ball well, but that's something Petrov can do just fine. And at thirty years old, is hardly a long-term solution.

Adam playing the role you describe above - no problem. Carrick playing that role - definitely not.

£12million? £40K a week? Yeah right.

Hope it comes off. He is the second worst centre back I can recall playing for us. Luckily Blues already have number one at left back too.

Feel a tad sorry for him

In the last season he was a regular he played throughout most of it with a dislocated shoulder popping in and out

not the best thing for a centre back to deal with really when competing in the hustle and bustle of the premier league

Honda would be nice, he looked class at the World Cup.

He's a number 10 isn't he?

So we could line  up like:

Makoun - Petrov
Downing - Honda - Ashley
Bent

Perhaps?

As i say, i would put Delph in the attacking role with Carrick behind with Makoun. What i didn't realise however, is that he is 30, so no i wouldn't bother. Don't think we should sign anyone over 30 really, so ditto if Crouch is that old. I think 28 is old enough, still get 3 good years then at least.

Carrick was a decent player at the time he left spurs for utd- well past his best now though and we need to be looking for a younger player.

Westwood made some very good saves in the game on sky now - looks a bargain at £1m ish.
I think holloway will sell Adam to Liverpool rather than us , but I'd rather a left back come in than a midfielder at the moment- Clark is going to be suspended soon as 7 bookings in 8 games mounts up and we need an alternative option.

Yes please regarding Honda. Superb player and maybe its a case of being asked so much for Adam that we may as well go for Honda.

Carrick is a wanker. Absolute waste of time in our team.
