TonyD , I think Houlier is looking for that scary muthafucka midfielder , thats why Sissoko keeps getting mentioned..
Is that the guy who played for Liverpool a while back?

No, Moussa Sissoko. Much better player.

Downing started as a kid at Sunderland and I believe is a sunderland fan, I'm sure as a local lad he would jump at the chance, we may want to offload some of our rejects but Bruce is a wily old fox, if he parts with bent it will be on his terms and maybe downing will indeed be part of the deal, plus possibly £6m?

I don't think we will be able to 'get Bent.'
Simply don't believe it.

I've come to realise that we're stuck with Geddy, he isn't going anywhere so as fans (and the board) have to back him. Still don't like him as the manager of our club though.

I hope the Spahic link is true purely because he can play left back and I have a stereotypical view that all Eastern Europeans are automatically no nonsense defenders (just like all Scandinavians work hard in any position)  He could be the next Bouma. Get him in.

The fact that dave woodhall posted the interest in bent makes me think it's more credible than some links , dave is usually pretty accurate with his information, If mon takes the west ham job how about hitz for petrov? He is almost fully fit now and I'm sure mon would prefer petrov to hitz- would be nice to see the hammer back here.

Aston Villa are preparing to make a move for former Liverpool star Momo Sissoko after the player revealed he is desperate to move elsewhere.
But the Italian giants are expected to set their asking price at £6million, which might well rule Villa out.
Sissoko said: 'The directors wanted to sell me at the beginning of the year and sometimes they try to enter into agreements that I do not like.

For me we need a striker, and if Bent was available which I dont think he is I would jump at the chance.

As for downing I find him so so frustrating with the ball at his feet he is a class player he can pass, cross and shoot effectively. My frustration is his desire and work rate when he doesnt have the ball..... for me he is a luxury player much like when the premier league first started and a number of foreign players were bought. He isnt a player for the fight or would pick the game up when the chips are down. If we were offered anything close to what we paid for him I would sell him.

Walker has really impressed me so far....quick pacey can attack but also in time I think will really be able to defend. Hope spurs are willing to sell.

We've also been linked more credibly to Moussa Sissoko, who is a better player.

GERARD Houllier will step up his search for a goalscorer after suggesting Villa’s failure to take their chances denied them a deserved derby victory at Blues.

Houllier continues to remain coy about his transfer window priorities, but it is understood the board are willing to invest in a top striker to boost Villa’s goal tally.

With Jean Makoun signed and awaiting a work permit, Villa are ready to test Blackpool’s resolve by upping their second £3.5 million offer for captain Charlie Adam.

An established left-back is still on Houllier’s January wish-list with Stephen Warnock continuing his exile amid rumours of a loan move to former club Liverpool.

But Villa’s total of just 23 league goals scored – the joint fourth worst in the top flight – has convinced the boss of the increasing need for a prolific goal-getter.

I've thought many things of Bruce over the years - dirty ugly manu geordie blue nose potato head bastard just about sums it up - but I've never thought of him  as a "a wily old fox".

What I like about Bent is the regularity with which he scores goals.  He went 5 games games without a goal a while back, and it was described as a "drought"!

Neither of our two top scorers from last season have scored in the league this season yet.  That's a goal scoring Gobi Desert in comparison.

Ah shit, even I'm talking about Bent now!

Villa are keeping the identity of their strike targets close to their chests with Monaco’s Congo international Dieumerci Mbokani the only known frontman on Houllier’s radar, but not believed to be his first choice.

However, they are believed to be tracking several forwards, which contrary to reports in France, do not include Panathinaikos’ former Liverpool player Djibril Cissé.

Villa’s fruitless pursuit of Manchester City’s £90,000 left-back Wayne Bridge, who instead joined West Ham on loan, suggests Randy Lerner could sanction big wages.

And it is understood that despite the £5 million-plus outlay for Makoun and cash earmarked for Adam, the Villa chairman also has significant transfer funds available for a striker.

Meanwhile, Houllier was encouraged by the spirit Villa showed to earn a draw at St Andrew’s yesterday, adding: “In terms of character they were outstanding.

“We’re not in a very comfortable position in the league, we know that, so we have got to fight for everything.

“It’s not easy for us at the moment, it’s difficult, we’ve had a bad run.

“We’re just getting out of it. We’ve got a difficult January in terms of fixtures, but we’ll be up for it.

“The attitude is a good springboard for results

He's done some decent transfer business at Wigan and Sunderland though, there's no denying that.

I cant understand some people on here slagging off the manager because they think he thinks he doesnt need a goalscorer..           He does know the problems and is trying to sort it, he just needs time get it done...
