To be clear, I mentioned no names, Situation (and thanks for noting that, east19).

I think that is fair enough. Anyone that knows anything but wants to let fans know should do so without putting anything in jeopardy on a public forum.

I have been thinking about the whole striker thing. If we got a player in the mold of Bent, what foramtion would we put in behind him. 4-4-2 flat gets ripped to shreds a lot these days, and I can't see Gabby and Bent being that successful. So would it be a move to 4-3-3 in the style of Chelsea with Gabby left, Albrighton right and then Makoun, Delph and Petrov centre? It is a tough one. I could see Bent and Heskey doing well due to the fact Emile will drop deeper and work his nads off for the team.

Oh I dont know, I think Gabby and Bent could be quite effective. I wouldn't use 4-4-2 all the time but it really depends on how good your central midfielders are as to how effective it will be.
Another bustling box to box midfielder alongside Makoun with hard working wingers and positive full backs and it could easily work a treat.

Of course, I think a clever striker who can play quick release balls, link play and contribute himself in the goal scoring stakes would be an ideal foil for Bent. For that reason I would be thinking of pairing him with Delfouneso, ultimately and also Heskey in the short term
But Gabby and Bent would be a very direct and muscular option we could use. Bent is also quite comfortable up front on his own.

If, and it's a big IF, we were to sign Bent we'd be looking to fit Young, Downing, Albrighton, Bannan, Bent, Agbonlahor, Heskey and Delfouenso into 3/4 positions.

Then there is Makoun, Delph, Reo-Coker, Petrov, Gardner, Hogg and Herd fighting over 2 places in the middle.

Can't see Bent joining in January. Just doesn't add up to me why they'd sell now and not the summer if he wanted to leave

I think Darren Bent would work really well with Heskey!

If we could get Bent on the end of all the One on one's that Gabby has we would be laughing!

I agree it sounds odd. But if Bent is unsettled as rumours suggest and if they think they can use the money/players from us to better use, who knows?

If getting Bent means losing Downing, i'd rather not bother.

Wasn't there some story about Bent's mother getting racially abused by a load of Sunderland "fans" a while back? Maybe he's not forgotten that?

Bent has 34 goals in 63 games for Sunderland. That's the kind of goal ratio we need someone to weigh in with.

And that's why they won't sell him.  And even if they do, they'll want a lot more than we can afford, and I don't imagine a club fighting relegation would be on his radar either.

Really? I'm suprised at that mate.
I dont want Downing to go either and hopefully we could do a deal to avoid that but in order to get a 20 goal a season striker I'd deliver him personally.
I wouldn't even claim fuel expenses.

What a mercenary bastard I am.

Just text my Mackem mate who has not heard anything about this, not that he necessarily would.

Something about challenging for Europe against relegation dog fight was his first response.

Then bit my hand off for Downing, Ireland and 10M.

Deal almost done then! Will keep you posted.

Agreed, it's one step forward one step back. Bent, despite his scoring record, offers absolutely nothing else. He doesn't hold the ball up, his touch is poor and he misses as many chances as he takes. We need more goals so I'd be willing to take the risk but not at the expense of giving away one of our better players.

Downing, Ireland and £10m? I very much doubt it.
I suspect you were not being sincere though.

i reckon we could cope without Downing. Its a tricky one but given a choice between Bent or Downing i'd probably take Bent. Just.
