Klose would be a fantastic signing and should solve the striker problem. Although I think the board may now be wary of signing players over 30, this is the kind of player that would be good for the club on a relatively short term deal while we look for a younger long term prospect or bring Delfouneso and Wiemann through.

2 and a half years of a proven goalscorer like one of these two in the team would do nothing less than give Villa the 'feel good factor' - difficult to see it happening though.

Van Bommel and Klose are the short term boost type signings that are ideal to mix in with the kids, both educationally and results wise. It is how Chelsea started with Gullit and Vialli, Spurs did it with Davids have got Gallas etc. Some older players with proven quality can be real gems. Got a couple like that I would be cnonfident of staying up with ease.

And the that's the reason Phil Neville is being looked at by spurs as well. Been there and done it, whereas most of the rest of their squad haven't. Makes a lot of sense, so hopefully something will come to fruition. (Waits for someone to mention Pires).

Ah I was going to mention Pires. I think he is the right type of player too, but his legs just look like they are too far gone at 37. 2 years ago maybe perfect, but we had no players fit when he came and he has not had the impact we had hoped, win some, lose some. Not going to be the long term cost of a Beye, Sidwell or Harewood though. And if he starts Sunday and nabs the winner, he can go away as a bit of a hero!

Starting Pires on Sunday would be suicidal.

Some of the names being mentioned remind me the time Ellis produced his list of the top strikers in Europe. Lots of talk to pacify the masses but never any realistic possibility of us signing them.

Can't see it, he'll bring Petrov back.

Klose and van bommel are box office names and would give the club a huge lift and boost gates too but I can't really see them coming here- I wish they would though!

He will bring Petrov in Chris, and Downing, but I think he will stick Pires in the Young role behind the forward.

Or more precisely there's still more time to go than has gone. You really enjoy the melodramatic, don't you?

Sorry Ozz, had forgotten about Young being out. I suppose that stands a chance but I really hope he doesn't.

I think GH is having a real go at bringing someone in and depending on their circumstances and finances one of them could arrive albeit on loan. Its hardly Ellis-era where he used to wait to read about a player agreeing terms with a club and then put in a bid 5m less than what was already agreed in an effort to fool people we were after them.
