John I agree and that is why I was saying at the midpoint of a 4 year deal, and not always a big rise, but putting any rises on continued performance, goals, appearances etc.

Wasn't the mid point of Young's 4 year deal this summer?

To me, he's flattered to decieve in the hole far too often this season. I'd stick him back left and play Downing in the hole who is intelligence and can pick passes.

I've said before I'd sell Young in January to get a better fee but in our present position we can't really afford that.

I agree HQ, We have to play Young on the left, he has been given plenty of chances to prove himself in the centre and he has not done it, as you say flatters to decieve and why does he take every dead ball? Bannan would be my choice with NRC and Petrov holding.

Aston Villa offer Reo-Coker in fresh bid to land Newcastle midfielder Barton

Aston Villa will step up their bid to sign Joey Barton from Newcastle this week and could offer Nigel Reo-Coker in part-exchange.

Newcastle want the midfielder to stay and have opened talks over a new contract but Villa manager Gerard Houllier is desperate to halt his side's slump and has identified Barton as the man to revitalise them.
Aston Villa believe Joey Barton can revive their season

Fresh move: Aston Villa believe Joey Barton can revive their season

Barton has been in outstanding form and Houllier believes the 28-year-old's fiery temperament can be channelled to Villa's benefit.

Barton's representative Willie McKay said: 'A lot of clubs have shown interest but Joey is very happy at Newcastle. His ambition is to play for England again and he should do as he is the best midfielder in the country at the moment.'

Newcastle manager Alan Pardew would be reluctant to lose Barton but cash plus his former West Ham charge Reo-Coker may prove persuasive.

Pardew is also ready to fight Wolves to sign Stoke's Glenn Whelan and remains hopeful of a deal for Birmingham's Sebastian Larsson, despite a rival offer from Sunderland.

Villa remain eager to sign Blackburn captain Chris Samba, with Stephen Warnock and James Collins being discussed as possible makeweights in an £8m deal for the defender.

Another rumoured swap deal?

Could almost be forgiven for thinking that we really have got no money.

The Daily Mail reporting Houllier offering Reo Coker as part of a deal for Joey Barton. Pardew is familiar with Reo from West Ham days ??? Hate the bloke but he is a league above Reo in football terms .......

Apart from anything else, who plays at left back? Clark? That's a big ask of him.

If Houllier does bring that arse to our club it'll be the final nail in his coffin for me.

Agree about the bloke. The player without baggage would be 15 million easy, the baggage makes him 2. Like buying a Cat C write off car, maybe even a B.

the one thing you and I agreed on the other day was that we really have a team devoid of balls right now. Now I hate Barton the man as much as the next bloke, but Barton the player, as much as he is a nasty piece of work, is quite brilliant when he wants to be. He's everything we need even if privately it makes us want to take a shower afterwards. Stick him in the middle with Samba at the back, and all of a sudden we're a lot fucking harder. Right now we're a soft touch and despite all of the promise and potential of some of the surrounding cast, you need a prick or two in there that will get in their faces and of the opposition when need be.
