Young's situation is another throwback to the MON days really. This policy of his of letting our best players get into the last years of their contract always put us on the backfoot when negotiating

Spot on, 2 years out they should be given a new deal or moved on for the maximum sell on IMO, as that will be the most cost effective solution if they don't want to sign. Holding on for 12 more months simply delays the inevitable if they are not lookign likely to sign.

Young did one good thing yesterday in setting up the goal. Even he I think or hope would admit he was woeful for the rest of the game, giving the ball away cheaply on too many occasions, causing him to petulantly get booked and then eventually sent off. His overall game is not as exciting as it was 2 years ago when you always felt he was likely to create something. If Spurs really wanted him this window and offered us a long term deal for Walker and maybe Kranjkaer and Keane, with or without cash we would be a better team for the swap IMO.

So you sign a player to a four year deal, then re-negotiate another one after the first year?

In the season leading up to the departure of both Barry and Milner (and Platt and Yorke if you want to go further back to previous high profile, big money departures), I can point to games when the performance of those players were significant factors us winning games.

When was the last time, hand on heart, that any of us can say that the difference between the two sides in a Villa win was the performance of Ashley Young?

cant blame mon for that greg , if a player doesnt want to sign and wants to assess his options thats his choice .

thats what clubs try to do especially with their younger players. 2 years is the minimum you can let valuable players contracts get to. Once they're in the last 24months of their contract you're in the danger area. If they get to 12 months, forget it really.

if we'd offered young a year extension this time last year, i reckon he would have took it. Then we'd have the luxury of negotiating this summer on our terms

I know we didn't win but I thought he mad a massive difference at Chelsea. I've also noted how Gabby seems to play much better when Ash is around. Although granted this hasn't really been the case in the last couple of matches.

So you advocate re-negotiating players contracts every year? Are you someones agent?

what i'm saying is people see a player on say a 3 year contract  and think thats a long time. the reality is you can knock off the last 18months . Once you get to that stage they've started looking around.

I was responding to Greg's idea that we should have negotiated Young's deal before it got down to less than two years. We did, it was Young who stalled after the window had closed. Greg is now suggesting we re-negotiate a four year deal after year one.

That's the modern day footballer for you i'm afraid.

I can see what Greg is saying and he has a point. Maybe a year into the 4 year contract is a bit too soon but it's probably been done in the past at other clubs.

all well and good trying to negotiate but if a player decides to wait then what choice does the club have?ultimately the players hold the power these days.

you should be talking to them in year 3 nick. not opening negotiations at the start of their last 24 months. A year extension last January would have saved us money in the long run. Now even if he signs a contract this summer its going to cost us a fortune

we've done it all through MON's time really. You only have to look at the amount of players coming to the end of thier contracts. ok, to be fair some of them MON probably didn't want to keep, but i remember with Olof he strung him along and then acted annoyed when he got a better offer
