Thewages we get back for Sidwell, maybe Beye or someone similar, how about a Bid for Raul at struggling Schalke?

I thought Sidwell's move hadn't gone through?

Not yet but its only stalled hasn't it? Is likely to still go through.

I think the deal hit a snag when West Ham let slip that they actually wanted him to play football, rather than just sit out another contract

So, are we now thinking Kyle Walker for the defence, Makoun for the midfield, but who upfront?  Can't think of any strong or re-occurring links to strikers!!

Would prefer to sign Kyle walker permanant rather than on loan or at least have a clause giving us the option of signing him- quality right back and if he does well for us his price will double so better to buy now.

Is makoun looking like he could sign or just speculation? Would be nice to add a keeper and striker this window too - anyone know if cummings is still on trial?

I thought he was on loan now?

Everytime I see the name Cummings it reminds me of Peter Butterworths Spanish hotel manager in 'Carry on abroad.'

We were all asking that at one point.

Apparently the Italian Goalie Marchetti has been released by Cagliari for some reason, he played in all 3 Italian games in the World Cup and is meant to be a decent keeper. Maybe worth a chance?

Latest I've seen on makoun was a report that Lyon told villa yesterday the asking price is £7m- anyone heard anything since?

As they paid £12m it seems like a fair enough asking price but reports spurs are sniffing around him too.

Did we 'have the chance'?

He signed for Sunderland to play first team football at a time when we had Gabby and Carew firmly entrenched as our strikers, plus a recently arrived Heskey behind them.  We also spent £17.5m (Dunne, Collins and Warnock) that summer on our crumbling defence, which was a much greater priority for us than a new striker.

Not saying I didn't want him then or now, but I don't think it was as straightforward as some believe.

It's more a case of why did we sign Heskey when we clearly needed a better more long term solution, at a time when Randy's cheque book was well and truly open.

Whether it was Bent or anybody else, O'Neill's lack of an effective striker signing post Carew was criminal.
