says fofana has only minor injury, but GH wants to hold fire, has he got the go ahead for someone else?..........Makoun?

I don't think it was a 'one or the other' situation. Fofana is young with potential. But he was probably after experience also.

disappointing. Hopefully because the club have agreed a deal they have first refusal. I find it odd that we wouldn't go ahead with this yet signed Downing who was unable to play for 6 months.

Seems like we want a player to go straight into the team.

It would have been nice to have got him and got someone else to go straight into the team.

Diarra or Makoun would more than make up for it, but we obviously wanted the kid if he was over for a medical.

Downing deal was different. He had been operated on and there was probably enough evidence ie scans and reports to say he would make a full recovery.

This sound like a possible underlying or previously not known problem. It is possible to insure the player in Downing's situation, probably mot able to in Fofana's

how does our signing of Pires remotely compare to this? You're getting quite good at making nonsense statements.

If Fofana only has a "minor" injury wonder if he is going to sign him at the end of the month ???

We need goals and we get an unknown on loan from the American league. What a joke.

he's on trial. Nice to see that you've given up on him before he's even had a chance to start. I find it funny how some people have such definitive opinions on players, then compliment managers like Moyes for unearthing gems like Arteta and Cahill. I can only imagine the outcry if we were on trip to the Caribbean and gave a break to some unheard of kid that just happened to be playing against us.

His side have also said that they want him back for the start of the MLS season, so it will be a loan at most.

What does that even mean?! We signed an experienced player, like we have numerous times before on a short term contract.

the thing is minor and underlying are very different things. Downing couldn't even take a medical, and there was no guarantee of the player making a full recovery. Quite a risk given the price. I just hope we have some contingency in place with the player and his club for the summer. I'd hate for him to end up elsewhere if he really is as promising as it sounds.

Houllier said "not likely". Maybe in the Summer. Sounds to me like the lad may need an operation. Maybe something hard to see if it will clear up easily eg Back, Knee etc

It depends minor injury could lead to underlying problems. I.e the term minor Knee injury. Downing certainly had a medical, without doubt. Xrays, scans, lung capacity, joint testing, blood tests, heart scans etc

fofana looks a good bet to me. the reservation for me was bringing in such a young foreign player into a team doing crap with divisions in the dressing room. hopefully he can bring in someone with more experience. as others have commented, a good centre half, a nasty bastard midfielder and a striker would be my wish - spine of the team 'n that. maybe a full back too
