A few years ago, when he was at Man Citeh (pre Dabo) I thought he was just what we need.

But a lot of water has passed under the bridge since then, and plenty of assault charges too.

The lad is a basket case and I reckon the few incidents on the pitch in recent years are merely a precursor to a really big meltdown. I'd very much like that meltdown to not be in a Villa shirt. West Ham or the B-lose would be ideal for him.  If the 'ammers went down and faced Millwall he'd really be in his element.

Avoid.

Watching Lorient vs Montpellier at the moment and Kevin Gameiro is really looking impressive again. Great movement and drops deep to link up play really well, bit like Robbie Keane in his pomp.

I'd be very surprised if we didn't sign a player from the french league next month.

Probably Makoun or Taye Taiwo though.

Makoun, possibly, although he has had something of a renaissance of late. Taiwo I think will see out his contract at OM and then move to one of Europes elite.

I agree that it seems likely we'll shop in France at some point. Someone who looked good in a 15 minute cameo tonight was Olivier Giroud, big centre forward, who looked very mobile and clever too!

Good call, but even better would be Jean Pierre Papin. We do need a goalscorer after all.

Stephen Warnock may join long list of players set to leave Aston Villa•

Stuart James The Guardian, Wednesday 22 December 2010 Article history

Gérard Houllier is planning an overhaul of his Aston Villa squad that could see as many as nine players leave the club before the start of next season. Steve Sidwell and Curtis Davies are expected to lead the exodus, although there may also be a few surprising names on the list, including the England international Stephen Warnock.

The Villa manager is looking to offload a number of senior players who are on the periphery of the first team as well as those who have been resistant to the changes he has introduced since taking charge in September. Richard Dunne, Stephen Ireland and John Carew, who were all left out of the squad who travelled to Wigan Athletic before Saturday's game was postponed, are expected to move on. Carew's contract is up in the summer and there is no prospect of him being offered a new deal.

It is understood that Brad Friedel, who will turn 40 in May, has also been told his contract will not be renewed in the summer. Villa have begun looking for a replacement for the former Blackburn Rovers goalkeeper. Roman Weidenfeller, the 30-year-old Borussia Dortmund keeper, was watched at the weekend. Houllier is also closely monitoring Allan McGregor's situation at Rangers.

Houllier is today expected to sit down with Randy Lerner, Villa's owner, to discuss plans for the January window. The club are looking to change their recruitment strategy and will seek to target promising young talent as opposed to experienced players in the twilight of their career who come with big wage demands and have no sell-on fee. For that reason Villa have no interest in signing Robbie Keane from Tottenham Hotspur despite continued speculation.

With Nigel Reo-Coker's new contract discussions at an impasse, it remains a strong possibility the midfielder will leave on a free transfer at the end of the season. Sidwell is on the verge of completing a move to West Ham United. Habib Beye, who has started only seven Premier League games for Villa, will also be encouraged to find another club.

While Villa supporters will not be surprised at most of the players Houllier is looking to shift, Warnock's name will raise a few eyebrows. Although the left-back's form tailed off towards the end of last season, he was named in the England squad for the World Cup and has generally been a solid performer. Houllier, however, has already set the wheels in motion to bring in a new left-back in the summer.

Davies, who is on loan at Leicester City, has been told he can leave Villa for £2.5m. He has attracted interest from Wolverhampton Wanderers, Stoke City and Bolton Wanderers, as well as Werder Bremen. "It's no secret Villa have made it quite clear Curtis is available," said Phil Sproson, Davies's agent. "There is an agreement in terms of the price, which is very competitive given his quality and experience. We are considering a couple of options, including the possibility of going overseas."

Oh yes.

We are all giving it the full Roger Moore.

I should have highlighted that line really. I think the writer may raise his own eyebrow in Spockian fashion if he actually knew how many of us wouldn't mind Warnock being shipped out, or at least dropped for someone better.

So Beye, Davies, Dunne, Warnock, Sidwell, Ireland and Carew all possible departures in Jan

With Friedel not being offered a new deal and Nige unless he drops his demands.

Pretty much what we all wanted, which is nice.

I can't see us shifting Dunne though, atleast not without subsidising his wages.

I'd like NRC to sign a new deal, my opinion of NRC has changed this season, I think he's been very good but I don't think we should be held to ransom by him. I imagine he'll want to be a first choice and probably want the armband.

I think Nigel will agree a new deal. At the moment he wants parity with the top earners, but houllier must of made it clear we can't afford those wages hence why we are shipping them all out.

We should only have a select few on top wage, at the moment Ash is the only person in that category.
