Does anyone know what sort off player Gary Gardner is? Who would be compared too currenly?

I would compare him most closely to Steven Gerrard.
He is an outstanding prospect. The only question in my mind is the results of the injury he's had but by all accounts it should not be an issue.
I was sure Albrighton would make it, I was sure Clark would make it, I'm still confident Delfouneso will excel but I'm absolutely sure that Gardner will.
He has a bit of everything and will also be formidable alongside Delph I would have thought.

Would I swap Milner for Young? I would hope to have them both but right now I probably would not. Because I think we have talent coming through and money to buy other players to compensate. I would however love Milner to come back. He'd be more than welcome.

Keane. He's a solid enough player but it smacks of a lack of imagination. Instead of Carew though, yes. Absolutely. He's committed, talented and can score goals but a long term solution he is not. At best he might be another Dean Saunders.
I would hope for better though. This is an opportunity to bring about revolution. However with Fonz, Gabby and Weimann we have enough youth and potential so maybe it could work. Ideally we get a youngster who is top class.

If I were offered another Dean Saunders right now I would snap your hand off.

However I would worry that Keane would be another Kevin Phillips, a useful body in the squad. But one who would cost us twice as much in both fees and wages.

5 million on Keane would be a good deal. He never needed pace so could play till he is 33 ish at the top level, give experience after Carew has gone (maybe even to Spurs in a swap knowing Harry) and will score more than most of our forwards have in the last few years.

I still hope Ireland does something spectacular and turns it round at Villa.

Why has he only scored three goals in his last 29 games for Spurs then?

He's been in and out of the team during that time, but I wouldn't want him being anything more than "in and out" of our team either.

Stick his fee and wages on a better striker and carry on bringing Delfouneso (who I think has a better scoring record over the same time period) through for me.

Agreed Dave.

He'll be 31 in the summer.

Put that £6 million + wages towards a younger striker on the up -in the £8-10+ million bracket on lower wages.

If Tottenham are so keen to get him off the wage bill I wouldn't turn my nose up at a short-term loan deal. But paying big darts for him and boosting their transfer funds at the same time is the worst of both worlds.

I'd take a Piennaar for Ireland swap if it was offered.

I'm probably one of the few who would not like Pienaar.
I think he's a bit of a wanker and vastly overrated.

You're not alone.

I don't mind Arteta though.

Add me to that list please.  And I do hope Gardner will be as good as you believe, a successful midfield three of Hogg, Delph & Gardner would be something to behold.

Just don't fancy Keane, his time to join us was some years ago.  Possibly now a busted flush and I can’t see where he would fit in.  If you play Albrighton & Downing then Young plays behind the front man.  That makes Keane an expensive, costly and possibly disruptive squad player. I’d rather we persevere with Ireland.

The thought puts a grand smile on my face. Can you just imagine if they did turn out as good as we hope?
Then the smile turns sour as you just know that some c*** with way too much money will waltz by, flash his cash and they'll prance off into the sunset together.

Young does not score enough goals to play off the main striker- I cannot see him being here much longer in any case, heskey gabby and keane would mean you could perm any 2 from those 3 but I would like to see us bring in a younger better finisher than heskey maybe in the summer.

I agree and in any case do we really need a political correspondent?

really don't want Keane. He's too old, and still struggling for form. 6m seems a lot for a stopgap and with two other strikers over 30 i'd hope we'd be looking for a younger model

Anyone in mind Greg? I remember last year posting andy Carroll would be worth a punt - I just wish we had gone for him at the time - now I don't think he's gettable , a yr ago he would have gone for maybe £4m.

That's the kind of player we need though.

well there's not going to be much around in January unless we really push the boat out financialy. maybe a loan deal for him but no more. personally i'd rather leave a forward or forwards to the summer. Downside to that is if we pick up another injury we're in trouble
