Who he buys in January will surely depend on the kind of set-up he wants to use.
If, for example, he wants to use a midfield destroyer and a playmaker, he could do worse than go for Sissoko as the destroyer and Badelj from Dinamo Zagreb as the playmaker.
Just for those that don't know about Badelj, he is 21/2 and likes to play from deep in the central midfield, spraying passes, not only wide but through the centre channels. It is because of his potential allied to what he already delivers that Zagreb were willing to let Modric leave.
We also need cover for the midfield destroyer type of role, so I would seriously consider Torosidis from Olympiakos. He's 25/6 and can play DM/RB/CB/LB. A short of John O'Shea type of player, versatile.
Also on loan at Olympiakos but belonging to St.Etienne is Kevin Miralles, who at 23/4 years of age can play RW/LW/SS or up front on his own.
Jelle Vossen, who we have been linked to anyway has been on form since he returned to RC Genk. He's hit 14 in 11 games. His valuation was £5 million.

Bloody hell he's young aint he!

I don't like this fixation GH has on foreign players. Whats wrong with good old fashioned british based players from the likes of west ham's reserves? What are our british scouts doing eh?

We need a left back in January as a matter of urgency I would think, with there being no natural cover for Warnock.
The things to be considered I would think are, do we want a British player, or a continental player.
If we are going for a continental player do we go for a northern continental, or a southern continental. There are advantages in each, as well as disadvantages.
Northern continental players, Norwegians, Swedes, Danes, Belgians, French and Dutch tend to settle in in England fairly well and quickly, wheras southern continentals usually take time to adjust.
The southern continentals usually are more ball playing types, who naturally play a slow, slow, quick type of game.
All a matter of personal preference for the manager I suppose, and until we know what type of game he wants to play, surmising who he might want to buy is a waste of time.

I think it would be interesting to pinpoint which nationality of player tends to settle and have a succesful career in the Premier League. It does seem to me, not neccesarily the nationality of player, but those who come from the French league have settled in pretty well. I'm sure there are probably as many bad examples as there are good though. Your Djembax2 vs your Essiens etc...

I don't think we'll get a centre half. I wouldn't sign one either, not without shipping Dunne or Cuellar out first. I rate Cuellar but we can't afford four senior centre halves on the books, even Man Utd don't have that.

Allan McGregor, Maynor Figueroa and Bendtner are players I'd look at in Jan.

When Nige, Stan and Delph are back centre midfield can wait till the Summer.

In the Summer I'd try and sign Michel Bastos if Ashley is off. And Hleb if Ireland is off.

GH has said he cancelled a scouting mission to France to watch a champions league game this week. I know Marseille were at home, who was Lyon playing?

Lyon played Tel Aviv at home. Although it has been reported that he didn't go as he met with Randy & Faulkner instead. Suppose he may have watched them on the telly!

i'd like to see someone brought in for centre midfield come what may. Even if petrov and NRC recover they could get crocked again with our luck and the midfield is weak anyway. Ireland well, he looks a complete lemon, sidwell - shocking waste of money, and inconsistent kids lerning their trade.  Gotta be addressed in January IMO

You're not wrong Greg, we need a midfield spoiler, who just stops the opposition in their tracks. Starts to make them think twice about coming forward!!

I would rather put a "spoiler alert" on our current midfield (and our current crooked midfield). Bearing in mind what GH said early on, what we need is probably players who can keep the ball within the team and without loosing momentum.

I see Tevez handed in a transfer request. Come to Villa Carlos and help us achieve great things.
