Also, how many games has Keane played since he moved to Liverpool 3 years or so ago? How many 90 minutes has he completed? Especially as he's the wrong side of 30,he'd be out of match practice, out of form and showing no confidence,a bit like an older version of Ireland.

I've said before but I'll say it again - I fully expect to see Djibril Cisse up front for us by the end of January.

According to in the press on the official website houllier has said he'd love to be reunited with michael owen- a good signing if he stays fit!

I would look no further than shay given for keeper - a top class keeper !

He would be if he had ever taken a cross in his life.

Or ventured outside his six yard box.

I'd rather shay given dealing with crosses than either brad- given has been one of the best keepers over the last few years and would be very reliable in my opinion, certainly a better option than Allan mcgregor!

Guzan is pretty ropey on crosses but Friedel is fine.

Given is a very decent shot-stopper, but is no better than average at anything else. Friedel's command of his area and distribution is several leagues above Given.

The only use I can see for Cisse is him as a sub for Gabby in the last 10 minutes of a game as we do need a pacey forward for games gabby can't play in.

I expect some signings from abroad, probably France. Must admit whenever I've seen the likes of Gignac and Horau play for France, they've looked completely woeful and the final batch Houllier signed at Liverpool (Cheyrou, Diouf and Diao weren't very good were they?)

Friedal has been a good keeper but I think he is suspect in the air and has flapped at and missed many crosses- as in the Blackburn game recently- given has 3 times been voted pfa goalkeeper of the season and I have never really seen him as dodgy on crosses but I take on board your views dave!

Friedel doesn't move from his six yard box either. Don't think Given would be an improvement in this respect but he is a younger alternative and a fine shot stopper

Cisse is finished as a top level player. Remember him at Sunderland!! Would prefer Keane on loan to Cisse. I wonder could we use Dunne as bait to tempt someone into a swap deal - Corluka or someone maybe?

Owen is currently out with a hamstring injury.

I had no idea this had happened, but just decided to check physioroom.com, as I was so certain that, if you take any random point in time, there is a good chance - 80 percent or higher - that Michael Owen will be injured.

Why we'd want to supplement an injury ravaged squad with another injury ravaged player is beyond me.

Signing Michael Owen would definitely NOT be a step in the right direction!

if our ambition is Robbie Keane then pull up a chair and watch mid table mediocrity for a long time, i really thought we had moved on from this type of signing,

We're looking up the league at that mid table mediocrity. Looks OK to me from where we currently are.

The whole league virtually is mid table mediocrity, and have we ever moved away from that anyway? I always thought 6th was just that really...

Crystal Palace will reluctantly sell star right-back Nathaniel Clyne after the full-back rejected several offers to extend his contract. Birmingham, Aston Villa, Fulham and Everton are all interested.

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier will fight Arsenal for goalkeeper Jason Steele if Middlesbrough decide to cash in on the England under-21 keeper.
