First time I've ever heard a rumour - but here goes...

A friend of mine spent a few days last week in Sligo, Ireland, and got chatting to a lad who is best buddies with Shay Given.  The lad in question was telling my friend in no uncertain terms that Shay is very keen on a move to Villa and that a move has been discussed. 

Now, I raised an eyebrow at this (not because I don't think Shay would want to go to Villa, I hasten to add) but my friend seemed pretty convinced by the whole story. 

I can't see it being likely myself, what with Brad Sr. being in very good form this year, but who knows?  Maybe the goalkeeping merry-go-round that was mooted this summer might just be happening in January?   I hope not!

Isn't Brad out of contract in the Summer?

He's been a good servant for us, but if we think we can get Given and have a good 3-4 years out of him as opposed to an extra one from Brad and allow Given to go elsewhere... perhaps it would be better to move Brad into a coaching role to source another keeper.

That said I don't particulaly rate Given that highly and think he relies on his reflexes, which are likely to fade sooner rather than later.

I'm not saying we should sign them. I'm just saying that they are not and never have been Arsenal players and as such the point 'All talented young French players play for Arsenal' is not completely accurate. There will still be some French players who are as promising as those were a few years back whom we can sign as youngsters and develop.

Though to be honest I think our youth scouting is pretty good.

Aston Villa have reportedly set their sights on Juventus FC Torino striker Amauri .

The 30-year-old Brazilian-born player is contracted to Juventus until 2012, but according to sources cited by the German 4-4-2 Web site, the Turin giants would be willing to sell him for around €9 million.

Amauri is a strong striker with a good technique and heading ability. He lacks a bit of speed, but he is a very talented forward with a good eye for goal.

Juventus bought the player in 2008 from Palermo, where he exploded, scoring 15 goals in the 2007/2008 season.

He has found the net 21 times in his last two seasons at Juventus, and has scored three goals this term, all coming in the UEFA Europa League.

Aston Villa boss Gerard Houllier is looking to boost his strike-force, with John Carew likely to be on his way in January.

Sets himself up as some kind of doyen on all things Spanish football, but it sounds like he's making it up on the hoof most of the time. I don't think I've ever heard one of his predictions re player movement or any other bobbins actually come to pass.

I don't think we have much chance of signing Benzema either, but is that numpty says it our chances have probably increased tenfold.

No it was Sid Lowe who is actually English but is based in Spain.
