Benzema isn't in the first XI but is still playing a part in pretty much every Madrid game at the moment.

Set up their winner at the weekend.

Whether we buy a striker or not, I doubt its to do with wages now.

I think thats largely under control and we'll be seeing the likes of Sidwell, Davies, Beye and a few others on fairly big money go in the coming year.

We thought that at the beginning of last summer, but were unable to shift them.  However, I do agree with your point that the wage bill has been reduced a fair bit.  If we take Milner's and Ireland's wages as the same, and imagine NRC does stay, then come summer 2011 we'll have the following (with my guesses as to wages):-
Gardner (£20k a week)
Shorey (£40k a week)
Carew (£50k a week)

So that's more or less enough wages for two top class players and over £20m incoming in fees once the Milner money is also included.  That's a tidy little 'warchest' for Gezza even before Randy looks to top it up!

Our kid reckons he's heard a whisper that we'll try to get Benzema on loan in the new year.

It was probably his own whisper though, in his sleep, just before he woke up.

It seems our kid is something of a visionary.

From The Daily Mail

Quote
Benzema would have no shortage of suitors if he was to leave Madrid, but Houllier has put himself first in the queue for a potential January loan move.

'If Karim wants to come and play at Aston Villa, we would sign him tomorrow,' Houllier told L'Equipe.

'We are keen to offer him more first-team opportunities.'

and while we are at it, we can off first team opportunities to messi, and cristiano ronaldo too...

on a serious note though, its nice to see us linked with a high profile player and maybe shows the managers future transfer plans are ambitious...

I'm shocked to hear GED being so candid about Benzema. Now that would be some coup.
Even if the odds are against it, it's nice to know that we have such ambition.

If no Benzema, I would like us to swoop for Elmander.

Until recently I would have balked at this suggestion but he's increasingly looking the part.
I'm not totally convinced yet though.

I must admit i for one would love to see Benzema plying his trade down at Villa Park but would he come that's the issue.

If I can't have the fillet steak I'd like spam fritters?

Hopefully there are a few more players between those two extremes.

Closer to the Benzema one, obv.

Signing Benzema on loan would be great... hopefully Houllier can make it happen.

Phillips Oclair I think is his name, is a english based French journo who speaks regular to Houllier said, Houllier reckons the current crop of young players at Villa are the best he has ever worked with. And that he reckons we will definatley buy a striker.
