You'd swap (currently) our best defensive midfielder, in his prime, for somebody about to retire?
Maybe Heroin is for you then Chris.

That Nigel Reo Coker is our best defensive midfielder says more about our midfield than him.

That said, Danny Murphy is not the answer.

The player that has impressed me in the Championship is Derby's Kris Commons - he could be worth a  punt

Commons is just about at his level, type who's seasons highlights would look impressive but thats it.

A fairly average Downing in that team and league would look like Messi.

Last point is that Savage is getting more plaudits from Rams fans! Enough said!!

I doubt it's heroin, I gather Chris is currently smoking the ashes of one Greg Nash.

I don't think there's much wrong at the Villa at all.

Just like others are saying, hopefully by the start of August we'll have Davies, Beye Sidwell and Carew off the wage bill.

As well as maybe Friedel (if Houllier can find a replacement although not an urgency) and perhaps one or two of Dunne, Luke, Warnock, Cuellar, Petrov and Heskey.

That, along with the Milner and Gardner money should give us the kitty we need for the dominating box to box midfielder and number 9, as well as a couple of hungry, younger players to replace the likes of Beye and Sidwell on a quater of the wages.

It's a bit scrappy at the moment but in the 4-1-4-1/4-2-3-1 the most important positions are the pivots - the holding player and centre forward. And we're missing our first choice three of both.

Ged's got a plan, it'll come to fruition with a bit of good fortune in the transfer market. The future's still bright.

Christ, I dont think we're in a position to lose half our squad. Certainly not Cuellar who is, I think, our best centre half. Even if he isnt playing.

I wouldn't put Reo Coker in our top 3 defensive midfielders.

Go on then. Right now, who are our top 3 defensive midfielders?
I dont even think we have 3.

I know he's a bit crackers, but every time I see Charles N'zogbia play he looks like the best player on the pitch. He's way too good for them, and we should step in, as insurance against Young fucking off.

Delph, Petrov, Clark.

All better on the ball than NRC, but all inferior when it comes tackling, energy and closing down the opposition.  Basically the defensive part of a defensive midfielder.

Delph, Petrov, Clark.

Delph isnt a defensive midfielder, he's a box to box player who has a bit of everything. Clark is an emerging centre half currently doing a good job and Petrov has been outperformed by NRC this season and has nowhere near the strength and mobilty that NRC has and a defensive midfielder must have. He also doesnt breathe through his arse after half an hour.

So that's 0 out of 3.

Reo Coker is a box to box midfielder like Delph, but without his array of passing/skill/goal threat etc.  Blues match for example NRC played the most forward of the 3 with Clark and Sidwell holding, but if I had to pick one as a sitting DM I'd have Delph as his ability on the ball is better and he has NRC's energy too.  Petrov, club captain, kept NRC out of the team for the last 3 yrs, preferred by our last 3 managers, far better on the ball/awareness/positional sense.  On Sat Clark played a better game at DM than I have seen from NRC in 4 years, kept the play ticking over, composed and broke forward only when sensible to do so.  He's also taller/better in the air.

So that's 3 out of 3.

NRC has never played himself into our team, he's only got chances when he's been the last player available, even with Barry and Milner out of the way and a new man in charge he wasn't in the team at the start of the season.

Again, the only thing I agree with in your posts is the date.
