We'll end up with Owen plus a midfielder I reckon
Please not Owen, he always strikes me that he doesn't give a shit anymore, not to mention his sugar glass legs.

Wouldn't be at all surprised if it is Owen.

Would hope for better but in saying that, I'm pretty certain he'd have snagged the chance that came Heskey's way yesterday (if he wasn't injured, obv). We've also had shedloads of  near misses as a team v Stoke, Tottenham, Chelsea and Slumberland.

You can make the argument that we're getting into positions and creating chances to miss, so that could be a positive. But nothing saps confidence more than a few defeats and we really do need to be putting these kind of matches to bed.

Owen would be fine for me if he was signed short term.  A loan would be ideal but would this contravene premier league rules?

Signing him long term would be mental.

I don't think we'll be able to sign a decent long term striking option in January. No one will want to do business then and even if they did, the prices would be out of our bracket at that time.

Owen until the end of the season could do a job. Play Heskey withdrawn to hold up play, and leave Owen last man, so he can play off the shoulder of the CB.

There is also the factor that we don't really know whether GH is part of the clubs long term plans.

I'm sure the board will say all the right things if questioned on that matter. But the fact is we were railroaded into a pretty narrow choice of selection due to the actions of the previous incumbent.

They backed MON heavily from 2006 onwards as it was anticipated that he was going to be with the club for a long stint. And in football terms he almost was.

But will they write large cheques for a guy whose success in the transfer market has always been patchy and who might not even be with us in 12/18 months? It might not be the most popular thing to say at the moment but it could be a factor.  If the club takes the decision he's not up to it or he might just decide that he doesn't need the aggro. He was semi retired when we went for him, lets not forget and he hardly had the cream of Europe banging on his door throwing top jobs at him in the last few years.

I think whilst he's here we have to back him.
But I think he might face certain limitations in the transfer market - not specifically financial ones either. It could be that his remit is to bring in older players on short term deals only, young players for next to nowt and others in the risk free (as much as is humanly possible in football) category with a definite resale value.

I think Houllier will get fairly sizeable backing.

I wouldn't believe a word that comes out of that pricks mouth. As I'm sure most of you agree.

Gotta love him eh?

Right now any story about Young to Spurs will be associated with them flogging Bale, probably to Man City.  So of course he's going to play it down.

I like the way villa is a club known for it's integrity and honesty but for once I would like the club to temporarily change their methods and leak some links for a few players.  Preferably ones we'd like too - Henderson, Toulalan, Benzema, Llorente - as we need to try and change this perception that we're solely a feeder club.

Besides you never know they might be interested (the agents will at least).

According to one of the papers yday, LLorentes asking price is £30m.

Hope we go for the Hendersons of this world.Would go for N'Zogbia if Asley goes, pref even if he does'nt go.

Very impressed with Onohua on Sat as our new RB, and would go for Dorrans from Boggies as replacement for Petrov/NRC/Sidwell.

Still would'nt be over disappointed with Doyle either.

Yes, that's quite true John.  But as others have said, he plays a shrewd (to put it politely) game with the football tabloid media.  I guess I just worry we'll be forced into a corner and end up selling or swapping a la Milner.
