was Randy keen to give it to him, or was he keen to give him every opportunity to apply and put forward his case? I know out here, people are often encouraged to apply for jobs even if they aren't fully qualified to get the experience of an interview, and even in rejection know what they have to work on. Maybe that was it. In a straight fight between Houllier and KM, Houllier wins every time. It's not even close.
I really don't think MacDonald was encouraged to go through what, for him, appeared to be an agonising process, in order to get interview experience and feedback!

I just think Randy was very keen on appointing MacDonald until the Newcastle and Rapid Vienna results were so bad that he wised up and looked for someone more experienced.

his facial contortions suggest that he's continuously constipated so may have given the impression of agony. I think if Randy was totally seriously about giving him the job, then the Everton victory against all odds would have been a great way of showing the boss how he turned around a bad situation. You're right though that the Rapid and certainly Newcastle results did him in.

Either way, I'm glad he didn't get it.

Did he really say THIS?

http://www.dailymail.co.uk/sport/football/article-1310772/Aston-Villa-boss-Gerard-Houllier-Were-Liverpool--expect-finish-7th-12th.html?

EDIT: "Aston Villa is not a club on the same level as Liverpool, let's be objective and honest. But it's a club which has got good infrastructure and a fine team which is after one thing - to improve year on year
Villa manager Gerard Houllier"

WTF????

Houllier really looks the part. We have a serious manager on our hands now. He is a born winner and that press conference was impressive.

Well done Randy and co.

As for Kevin Mac looking constipated, I have heard it mentioned by others! He is a great bloke but he did not impress me during his tenure as caretaker. If he is to be a manager, he would need to prove himself elsewhere.

That's paraphrased from the article that's already been discussed isn't it?

it's been discussed to death on the other Houllier threads. We don't really know the full context of that quote, and frankly it doesn't matter in the slightest. He hasn't come here to be mid-table if that's what the article suggests that we are.

I apologise.  I didn't know it was on the other threads.  I thought it'd come from the press conference.  Where did he say it then?  Doesn't sound very flattering.

I'm trying to be objective here and I do think that, in essence, what Houllier was saying was that when you are trawling someone's wife, seagulls are better than sardines.

you sound like cantona, lol
He didn't see it.

Oh, and, at ease everybody, for Sullivan and Gold have pipped us to the signing (according to Radio Monte Carlo)

he said to a French magazine or newspaper. Can't remember now. But again, it's a snippet from a conversation and we don't know the specific question that was asked. Was there more than one question? Instead of asking "where do you see Villa as a club?", how about "how do you remember Villa as a club from your time at Liverpool?". If that was the question, then in the time he was here we didn't really challenge for much, and even came in the bottom 6 one year. So again, not a big deal.

Fair enough.  It would be just like the press to put a negative spin on a story involving any club so I'll take his 'comments' with a pinch of salt.  The PC actually came across rather well now that I have seen it.  Hopefully he gets his arse in the hotseat in time for Bolton.  I shudder to think what tactical anomalies we will see at Stoke.

If that was the question, then in the time he was here we didn't really challenge for much

He came to Liverpool in 1998 didn't he?  Didn't we top the table for much of 98/99?  And didn't we top the table again after winning at Anfield in 2000/2001?  Not forgetting the FA Cup final.

I meant in the league with my challenge for much line and I'm getting where we ended up in his time here. Being top is all good and well if you can see it through. I think we didn't finish higher than 6th in any of those seasons, and finished 15th or something in that period also.

Aside from the history lesson he gave us that sounded a bit stilted, I picked out that:

(a) Champions League isn't an immediate goal
(b) He thinks January is a bad time of year to do business, but he'll still have a look.

If you think about it deep down are we ready for champions league yet ?  We dont have the squad depth yet
look what happened in the europa when we changed a few players about to rest them for the premier league game?  and look what happened to spurs when they didnt change many players against wigan,  they were fucked and lost

and janurary isnt the best time to buy players because prices go up,  players are carrying little knocks...

I don't, no.  But I'd say we're about two players away from a squad capable of challenging. A good DM/ CM and a top class forward. A manager with cojones might back himself to source those players, rather than talking in riddles about 7th-12th.

We're an established top 6 club, and have been for three years. During that time there have been periods when we looked like we could get even higher. Indeed, we were probably disappointed at *only* finishing 6th for the past two seasons. If GH says he sees us as a 7th-12th side that indicates he hasn't been following the game all too closely in this country since he's been out of it.  7th-12th is roughly consistent with the JG/ GT era.

Note: I'm not saying anything less than 4th this year is't good enough and he should be chased out if he doesn't deliver. It's probably the least favourable season for us to achieve it with the strength of the other sides around us and the managerial shitstorm we've just encountered.

Le Figaro full quote:

"Aston Villa is not a club on the same level as Liverpool, let's be objective and honest. For me it's a club placed between 7th and 12th. It's an historic club, which has won the Champions League [in 1982]. It's a club which has got good infrastructure, a fine team, and which only asks one thing - to improve year on year."

Why choose a club in the middle of the English [Premier League] table, after getting a taste at the highest level in the past?

"Of course I had other proposals, butt this one seemed to be the most interesting, in terms of the work environment, its working conditions"

We're NOT a fcuking mid-table team!
